Getting things running smoothly with my iPod 5.5g
« on: January 08, 2007, 11:56:50 PM »
Hey everyone!

I'm new to this forum, so please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place. I own an iPod 5.5g 30 GB (black), and I currently have a CVS build of rockbox installed on it. The only real reasons I chose rockbox is its support of different audio formats like vorbis and flac, and the folder based organization system. I have a large folder hierarchy of music, and I am very used to navigating it with Winamp. I don't like the whole library concept. I am a big vorbis fan, and a significant portion of my music collection is in vorbis. Enough anyway to make me not want to convert it to mp3 or AAC.

Right now I am just using the Apple headphones (hate them), but I have ordered some Senheisser HD-580 cans, which I am very familiar with and love dearly.

Anyway, I have a few issues with rockbox, and I was hoping you elite users could help me, so that I can be comfortable with it. My ultimate goal would be to have a theme that mimics the Apple firmware in every way possible (visuals not really important).

1) Sometimes when I pause a song, it doesn't seem to register. I have to hit it a couple of times to get it to work. Also, when I resume it sometimes starts the track over. What's the deal? Also, I would like to be able to keep track of where I am in a song or audiobook, so that I don't have to seek when powering on after a shutdown.

2) I know battery life isn't as good. There doesn't seem to be much that can be done about this one.

3) Video playback. I am still booting into the Apple firmware to play x264/nero AAC encoded MP4s. Is there any way to do this in Rockbox?

4) Little bugs, like when switching themes, sometimes certain attributes like font color carry over from the previous theme.

There are other things too, but these are what I'm really concerned with. Any suggestions? I really don't want to have to start using iTunes and librarify all my music..

~MiSfit

Thanks~

1) What format are the songs that start over? Both resume and pause don't normally have this problem, though if you stop playback and attempt to resume on a file that can't be seeked in this may occur.

2) Well, things can be done, but not so much from the user end. :) It will improve with time.

3) Rockbox only supports MPEG1/2 with MP3 44.1khz audio right now, and that support is still limited at the moment.

4) The attributes that don't change between themes are actually the fault of the theme designer, most likely. If a theme doesn't explicitly set the font color, it stays the same. This is because many text-only themes don't require a set font color. The problem is, many theme designers assume that you're using the default font color, or backdrop color, or whatnot, when you aren't, and so they don't explicitly set it to the default value. This is unfortunate, but an aspect of what was necessary to make things work right in other cases. If you find that it's not a case of something not being explicitly set in the theme, though, I'd be interestd to hear about it.

Jeez, don't people know how to say thank you in this forum?

Thank you, Llorean, for your time and effort in such a prompt and detailed response.
