Random new directory feature--super!
(1/1)
Mikerman:
I just upgraded after a few months to a new Rockbox build and boy, the new random directory feature works well!
:)
For those of you who haven't yet tried it, you run its related plugin once and then, at the end of a directory (or if you use a button press to advance to a new directory), the player plays another directory chosen at random. One can even exclude directories from being kept on the random directory list, in the course of the running of the plugin.
In the "perfect" world, the running of the plugin would not be necessary. Also, it would be ideal if one could have certain "forced" plays (such as, where one has a 2-CD/directory set and always wants the 2nd CD to follow the first--typically, I have such sets in the same folder, in separate subfolders). But as is, the option is slick--many thanks for it!
:)
Llorean:
The plugin is used because that keeps the core binary size down. I'm not sure how you would keep it being configurable, without a plugin, without increasing the size of the main binary.
The real advantage of this is that code which may typically be used only once over a very long period of time is kept from decreasing the main audio buffer, or causing space issues on the oldest targets.
Mikerman:
All understood (but one always can have a wishlist if the code size were to allow, while recognizing that there are limits and tradeoffs to everything in Rockbox, and life (witness the size of my tiny house)--while still enjoying the marvelous features of this very welcome feature that works so well now). Again, many thanks!

Llorean:
I'm not sure what extra functionality you'd get from not having it as a plugin anyway. Either way you still have to select it from a menu and configure it...
Mikerman:
In the "If everything in the world was possible" vein, not having a plugin would just make the process a few clicks more automatic, including when one adds music to the player (and especially if one is not further configuring matters).
A great plugin, again--many thanks! Â
