Rockbox on Gigabeat: impressions, suggestions
« on: January 07, 2007, 08:45:14 AM »
Hello! First of all, I want to say a big "thank you" to those who work on the Gigabeat port of Rockbox. Finally, Rockbox (the daily build from 2007-01-07) works on my F60 with no major issues. And it's as though I bought a completely new player :) Superb audio quality (better than w/ the stock firmware, I feel), no longer requires DRMing all music, and it now even plays Ogg. 8-) Thanks again.

One thing I notice that could be improved relative to the stock firmware is the button controls. If you happen to own a physical Gigabeat, you surely know that it has the "plus" pad buttons, which provide no tactile feedback on whether they have been pressed or not. With Rockbox, I noticed that it became much more difficult to press those buttons "just right". Tapping them either fails to register a keypress, or sometimes (if i touch for longer time or try to "slide" on a button) registers a keypress twice. Perhaps some timeouts in the button reaction code may need to be adjusted (or something). Or maybe Rockbox filters out very short keypresses (which exactly happen when you "tap" the plus sign as it was intended)?

Also, in the stock firmware of Gigabeat there were lots of meaningful control functions assigned to "sliding" from one side of plus sign to the other. E.g. sliding your finger through "left-center-right" would open folder view of the currently playing song. Also, "bottom-center-top" would open the top-level media menu, and "top-center-bottom" would return back to the song. Do you think it is possible to implement control sequences like these in Rockbox?

There is a proper place for both bug reports and feature requests. Your post contains one of each.

yes i did like the sliding shortcuts, they would be quite a bonus in the rockbox firmware. thats a great idea, you should post that in feature requests, as for the cross pad button problems, i havnt noticed anything wrong, they seem to work fine for me, i remember the button controls in the stock firmware required some getting used to.

^ one big sentance

Talking about the buttons, is there a way to control sensitive with the buttons?

No, it's not possible, but perhaps it can be emulated:

The pad consists of 13 sensors. If you press harder more of them will be pressed at the same time...

Soaa was working on it, but I don't know how far he got.

I just loaded my Gigabeat last night and I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with the bookmarks. I can't seem to activate a book mark from the "recent bookmarks".  I can scroll through bookmarks, but can't seem to activate one by pressing "Select". The only other active "key" is the power button which erases the bookmark.

I was reluctant to flag this as a bug until I got feedback from other Gigabeat users.
