Use H120 w/headphone amp w/o volume control?
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:09:07 PM »
I was looking at some CMOY headphone amps on Ebay today and came across a couple that were relatively cheap, presumably because they lack a volume control:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBUAA:US:11&Item=170066007221

The seller says in the description: "Gain is set at 20, use volume on MP3 player."  As the H120's line out is variable, this seems like a good match.

My question, though, is whether there'd be any difference in sound quality by using the line output from the H120 at a lower level than 0dB in Rockbox to feed the amp.  Any ideas?

Look up

Little Dot Micro.

It's a much better amp.  Then f you wanted more, you could always check out Ray Samuels Audio, Shellbrook, or Prelude Audio.

There are many other choices for amps as well.  The CMOY is mainly just an amp for people who do not want to pay much at all and/or to give them experience with and provide an intro into DIY audio.

I suggest that you go over to http://www.head-fi.org/forums/index.php and start reading.

The PA2V2 is a nice little amp that's reasonably priced. Do an ebay search.
