Error adding bootloader to 4G iPod using current files
« on: January 05, 2007, 11:05:28 PM »
Using the command-line:
   c:\rockbox>ipodpatcher 1 -a bootloader-ipod4g.ipod
I am receiving the following error which is preventing the bootloader from installing:
[ERR]  Model name in input file (  /-) doesn't match ipod model (ip4g)

I am using the latest version of the ipodpatcher and bootloader-ipod4g.ipod file and have extracted the directory .rockbox to the root of the iPod... I'm following the instructions in the latest manual linked from the releases section and have made sure that I downloaded the correct version for my iPod.

I've even completely reset the iPod to factory defaults with no joy.  I fruitlessly - and should have known it would fail - edited the .ipod file to contain ip4g in the slot where it's finding the wrong model name.  This just changed the error to include my entry as the "wrong model name"...

At any rate, I'm not sure where to go from here and hope for some help... the only similar entry I found in hte forum was for someone using an old bootloader, but I definitely have the most current one at this time.

Any suggestions?

Is your iPod the 4g greyscale, or the color/photo?

It is the greyscale, 20GB version... software version 3.1.1.
The --scan found the iPod with no trouble, and the backup of the original boot partition happens as expected and without errors and it is formatted FAT32 for Windows...

I downloaded today's build (01/06/07) of everything and this time, it worked!  Maybe it was something specific in the build from the 5th and my particular iPod (although I did also try the build from the 4th with the same results as yesterday.)

Anyway, today's build gave me no errors, so I will go play with it further and see how everything goes.

Thanks for taking a look... cT

Your original error message indicates that your download of the bootloader-ipod4g.ipod went wrong.

The bootloaders almost never change (there have been two versions in the last year), so you simply downloaded it successfully the second time.
