ipodpatcher

He is probably referring to command.com.  Also, many people use a digicam in these situations.

GodEater:
Just for completeness sake - can you walk us through exactly how you're starting the command prompt in the first place ?

iR0x:
Yeah I was talking about command.com which was the "real" command prompt used before win2k.
After that Microsoft replaced the command prompt by cmd which is as they call it an "emulated"
command prompt.

I suppose that if they changed the command prompt in Vista in order to make it open a new window
for each app, they probably updated their "emulated" cmd command prompt.

So if you can still run command.com, it might work.

To run command.com, go the your windows "Start" button, then choose "Run..", then type
"command", and press enter.

PS : It may be noteworthy to tell you that command.com does not support names that are longer than
8 letters. So if you have a folder called "Documents And Settings" you would need to use
"Docume~1".
But if you used "C:\rockbox\" there should be no problems.

dvatterott:
ok yeah, command.com is still on vista, but it is doing the same thing as the command prompt.
To walk you through what I am doing. In the command prompt or command.com, I type in C: then press enter. I think type cd \rockbox followed by enter. Then I type in ipodpatcher --scan and press enter. This is when the application requests me to let it open and I say okay and it opens in a new command prompt or command.com window. The window will say something about searching for the ipod and then quickly disappear when it is done. When I request a output.txt (ipodpatcher --scan>output.txt), the .txt is a zero byte file with no text, obviously. When I type ipodpatcher --scan > output.txt, the output file is simply a file and contains zero bytes.

GodEater:
Ahhh - that starts to make sense. It's Vista trying to "protect" you from something which does some lowlevel hardware access.

I suspect it possible to turn this behaviour off specifically for ipodpatcher - I *know* it's possible to turn it off globally for the OS - although I don't have the details to hand. I suggest googling for a way to turn of this mode in Vista and see if that helps.
