battery life comparison
« on: January 02, 2007, 08:40:48 PM »
Hey I was just wondering what is the battery life on my rockbox 5G Ipod Vs. the same iPod with the original firmware... Both ONLY playing music (nonstop from beginning of battery life to end)... and I was also wondering one more thing... when i charge my ipod I put on this theme which puts a number as to how much battery life I have life (eg. 75% battery life left) and it never seems to go past 75%.... is that just a fault in the theme? or is it something else?

My experience is that it's roughly half of the life you'd get using stock firmware.

As to charging percentage, the same behavior happens on mine. While charging the percentage indication is not terribly accurate. Heck half of the times when it stops charging it still reads 90% or some other lower number, then as soon as I unplug it jumps to 100%

Also, discharge percentages aren't always accurate. They skew on the pessimistic side then suddenly jump up once in a little bit. This behavior is seen with Apple firmware too.

I found with my H340 that when the player was charging, it always said 88%, but then as you unplug, it went up to 100% (if fully charged that is).  So it's not unusual.

Well, now that you mention it, sometimes, when im using my box, i check the battery stat, and it says that's full (100% charge). Suddenly, i look again, and the counter drops to 83%.
I believe it could be something with the theme im using.
Or maybe its just a bug.

I have been reading some posts (might be old, though), where it was said, that the battery meter is not completely accurate, hence the strange readings.

thank you for link,  but this info dont dispalay real things ))

I listen to music in mp3 with bitrate 320 bps..
but my iPod Video 30Gb plays not longer than 2 hours!!!
i only listen to music, not watchin videos or smth..

i think its not compatible with original apple firmware - player is alive for 15 hours at least...
its very strange..

Q to developers:
can you do something with battery life lenght?
i dont understand why the rockbox firmware reduce battery life in 6 times!!

its the only disadvantage i've found yet.. the rest is perfect ))

waiting for comments...

1) We require you to use real words. Not abbreviations like "smth" or replacements like "4" for "for."

2) The numbers on the IpodRuntime data are real, and submitted by users like you. If you're getting 1/7 of your Retail Firmware livetime, I would hazard that you are not comparing under identical conditions. 1/2 is much more common.

ok, even if rockbox reduces battery lifetime twice, i wondered, would it be fixed in future?
i think you can not deny that it is abnormal...
thanks..

The goal is to have better battery life than the original firmware. On other players we have accomplished this. We don't deny that the battery life is poor on the iPods right now. The most likely cause is hardware that is active when it shouldn't be (such as when we did not properly sleep the USB on the go hardware for the H300) but because of the lack of documentation for the PortalPlayer chipset, it may be some time before these issues are resolved.

yes, i noticed that. iPod continue using hardware sourses even when it is in passive mode.

what kind of documentation do you need?
I have sources, and that fact that i live in Moscow (Russia) gives me more chances to find any papers and docs that can help you..
I really want to help you developing this firmware.
Somehow...
I'm IT specialist, not programmer, so i can help only getting information....

Primarily we need documentation that PortalPlayer specifically does not release without a non-disclosure agreement, so if such were available to you it would be unfortunately unusable by us.

Ok
a guess there are plenty of PortalPlayer documents.
Can you define the scope?

Ha!  This is the problem, there are no freely available PortalPlayer documents.  As for the scope, datasheets for all chips used would be nice, so long as we can legally use them!  This I doubt
