Bootloader wont load Apple firmware
« on: January 02, 2007, 08:19:05 PM »
Hello, I used this guide http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodInstallationBeta to the tee for installation of Rockbox on my 2nd Gen. Mini.

The problem is it won't let me boot back into the Apple firmware. I know how to do it.. turn it on then lock, yet when it gets to the point where it says "Loading original firmware" it restarts and repeats itself over and over again.

i try to load the ipod original firmware but i can`t, it keeps reboot the ipod and i can't make it load.

i followed the instructions but in the screen when appears "loading the original firmware" the ipod reboot and load rockbox instead of the original firmware

if i keep doing that the ipod reboot every time.

Should this be moved to the Apple forum for better responses?

that seems to be an general issue with some (all?) ipod-devices
and the new bootloader.
my ipod color didn't boot into original firmware also.

so i installed the loader 2 from ipodlinux

that gives me a bootmenu from where i can choose
which firmware to load

and it works fine since then
 :)

Can you install just the loader? or you have to install the whole fimrware in order to do that? I mean, to select with which firmware to load?
I didn't know that iPodlinux and RockBox could hang out in the same player.

i have just the loader installed, no ipodlinux.

my ipod color is fat32 formatted and with a
mikeage no frequency scaling build on it.

i also have an ipod mini 2g with a normal build on it (and the loader 2)

i installed the loader with the rockbox installer x, found in the ipodwizard forum,
it's not supportet here, i guess.

Installer X was developed by Kreator666 and another person at ipodwizard.net.  As such it is not an official installer -- though useful for many people.  Nonetheless, questions about it should be directed there.

I'm sure the developers here would be interested if their bootloader doesn't work properly on some targets.  Though it's impossible for me to know if this is a universal problem or perhaps has to do with some ambiguity in the instructions.  Admittedly, I haven't switched to the new bootloader yet.

I got the same problem. So the only solution we're finding at the moment is to use an alternative bootloader?

I'm still having this problem, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's something I did since it's not being discussed on the forums at all. Is this a user error or a bug in the bootloader?

It appears to be a problem with the new bootloader and some older models of iPods.   The following disclaimer is at the top of the IpodInstallationBeta page:

Quote
NOTE: These instructions are known to have problems with the 1st and 2nd Generation Mini and 4G (Greyscale) ipods - Rockbox loads correctly, but the original Apple firmware will not start. Also, ipodpatcher does not yet work with the 3G (third generation) ipods. If you have one of these ipods, you should continue using the old installation instructions linked to from the IpodPort page.

The only old method I found was for windows and I'm running linux. Am I missing something? I've also tried Ipodlinux's bootloader and it mentions dependency issues. (textinput and tiwidgets)

I have to be honest..I'm a little intimidated by that method. Is there a chance that this bug will be fixed?

Yes, it will be fixed, but I can't say when.
