after Rockbox update H120 won't play no more
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:35:00 AM »
Abt. two days ago I decided to download a new daily build and draged the .rockbox file into the H100 folder, whereopun I was asked if I wanted it to sustitute the old one and I clicked 'yes'.
Now it does not play any mp3s any more, a message saying 'codec Failure' flashes, otherwise the player seems to perform normally.
The orginal firmware does play the music and overwriting with the old version of .rockbox did not change it, still it says codec failure.

I have been running Rockbox since the day I got the H120 and it has been a joy.
This was my first 'upgrade' attempt, just being curious if I could recognize changes. Well, I do...this is why I write...

have I made a mistake trying to upgrad to a daily build in this manner?
can I install some codec only, or substitute the codec folder?
should I formt my harddisc once? ( never done yet, had no necessity and I don't want to since the player is full. - might find some quick guide for this around here )

how to...?

You need to extract and replace the whole archive including the .rockbox folder to update a build, not just the rockbox.iriver file

hm..the winzip created two files, one called .rockbox and the other rockbox.iriver.
I only had dragged the .rockbox file
should I put both on the H100?

edit: just tried that, but no change

Extract the entire archive direct to the root of your DAP.  .rockbox is a folder containing many files.

I have just done that with the new daily build, problem persists.
Should I try same procedure as first time Rockbox installation?

I believe that rockbox looks for rockbox.iriver first inside the .rockbox folder, then in the root directory.  Are you sure you don't have an old rockbox.iriver inside a new .rockbox folder?

Delete .rockbox and rockbox.iriver completely from your DAP, and then extract a new build directly to the root directory and see what that does, being sure to save any custom files you have placed in there first.

YES...thank you very much guys, it's up and running well!

Don't really know how it happened thoough, removing .rockbox and substituting it was no success first, but after rescuing the deleted .rockbox from the recycle bin to the H100 it worked again... ;D

happy fellow here..

edit: after next start up same old prob again... :'(

inside the .rockbox I do not find any rockbox.irver file
inside the codec folder only a 'mp3.enc.codec' file which mentiones mp3.

hey, and now I realize that on my PC, in the explorer H100 includes only a handful files, but not any of my music any more :'(
It's there, I can see them on the player

Which bootloader are you using?  If you are using the experimental bootloader that allows you to flash the Rockbox firmware to ROM, then you need to re-flash the firmware when you update.

hm...no idea which bootloader.
Did I really have to use one? Here in the page it says bootloader is for developers.

just searched for a file that could have been the bootloader but could ot find any, in the wiki I can't identify what I had used for a bootloader then.

So...just exchanging the olc .rockbox file with the new did not upgrade and left me with a problem, now
which is the proper way,
or how to repair?
install all new?

How Sould I best proceed?

What does your player say when it boots?  The bootloader version should be identified there.

now I tried to start from the beginning.
Firmware is 1.66 JP, I opened the fwpatcher.exe and browsed to the firmware 1.66 JP and clicked 'patch', a message appears reading: 'could not open firmware'
That did not happen when I installed rockbox the first time.

I remember I was amazed that I had succeeded in getting Rockbox to run that time. Should have studied up, but what for, it has been working...I need to understand more:
So I must ask:
what is 'flashing'?
what is: first to ROM, and then to re-flash?
Or don't I need?

If you have bootloader v6, then you don't need to change the bootloader.

Try this:

1.  Plug in your player to USB.  Navigate to the .rockbox folder and rename it to something like .rockbox-old.

2.  Delete your existing rockbox.iriver file.

3.  Download a new build and extract it to the root of your player.

4.  Disconnect from USB and try booting Rockbox.

If you still have trouble, try clearing the settings from the Main Menu --> Manage Settings --> Reset Settings.

had made he stupid mistake and had copied the files to another drive...there are so many on this - not mine - PC, and there was a small, almost one empty called H
finally did put .rockbox and rockbox.iriver on the player's root, it asked me if I wanted to reboot now and I said yes.
The appearance on the iriver was new then, not the one I had configured, but on trying playback the codec failure continued. Conected to USB again, and now it is not recognized any more!! :'(

edit: after restarting both player via USB recognized again, I then again transferred both .rockbox and rockbox.iriver, and now it does play the music!  ;D

then I tried to open the .rockbox file on the player to configure the interface, but the .rockbox folder has a cross as symbol to ot's left and does not open, instead it jumps back to the root folder.

tried to, but I can't rename the .rockbox file. Even though I doid type a new name it says I must type a filename and on enter does not change it's name.

did that

and that, now playback is normal! ;D
However there is a cross next to the .rockbox file and it is not accessable inside the H120. ( edit: now accessable, had to choose in 'general setting' > 'file view' >  'show all' first )

If you still have trouble, try clearing the settings from the Main Menu --> Manage Settings --> Reset Settings.

was not necessary.

THANK'S ;)

later edit:
theme, font and button behaviour are congigured to my liking again, but there is one disturbing thing remaining:
in the recording screen I only can adjust the total gain, I cannot choose if I want to adjust a single channel individually or both together as it used to be.
Can I define this in the settings, or is this changed from earlier rockbox versions?
