Rockbox music and Apple OS music problems
« on: December 31, 2006, 12:29:56 PM »
ok i have rockbox, ipodlinux, and apple os. They are all running. Here's the problem:

when i make a folder in my ipod root called "music" and put my music in there, it runs and shows up in rockbox BUT not in the apple OS.

when i upload my music using itunes, the music shows up in the Apple OS BUT not rockbox.

what can i do to make the music show up in rockbox and apple OS?

iTunes stores music in hidden folders within the iPod_Control folder.  The apple firmware uses a database file which is updated by iTunes with the locations of the music files in the hidden folder.

ok i found this:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Windows Instructions

   1. Get the win32 binary, extract all the files into the same folder.
   2. Attach your iPod to your computer and locate the iTunesDB file (should be at    Z:\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB if your iPod is drive Z).
   3. Run itdb2tc.exe from a command prompt (itdb2tc.exe Z:\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB, for example)
   4. tagcache_0.tcd through tagcache_5.tcd and tagcached_idx.tcd should be created.
   5. Transfer the .tcd files to \.rockbox on your iPod.

i dont understand step 3. i ran the itdb2tc.exe file and a command window popped up for a second and the closed. What do i do? how do u run the itdb2tc.exe from the command promt?

as for step 4, no new files were created as far as i can see.

To open a command prompt, in windows, click on the start menu, click on "run...", type in cmd, hit enter or click OK, then a command prompt is opened.  Using the command prompt, change to the directory where you saved itdb2tc.exe, then type in the command in step 3, and you should be good to go.

At the command prompt window, type in (without parentheses) "cd\zzzz" with zzzz being the folder where you saved itdb2tc.exe.  If you saved itdb2tc.exe on your desktop, then simply type the command in step 3.  If you saved itdb2tc.exe somewhere else, then type in that location.  For example,
"cd\files/tools" if you saved itdb2tc.exe in the c:/files/tools folder.

ok i have that itdb2tc.exe file saved on my desktop.

I type " itdb2tc.exe I:\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB " in the command prompt and it comes up
in a new window saying: something, something, something, is not a valid Win32 application"

Before you type in the command, does the command prompt display:
c:\documents and settings\Username\Desktop>
The information displayed needs to match the location where itdb2tc.exe is stored, otherwise you will get the error message you got.

Don't do this.  It's rude, and whiny, and not necessary.

The answer to your original question is in the manual.  Look specifically for the section on the Rockbox Database.
