ipod nano not seen by windows (USB connection)
« on: December 30, 2006, 05:29:57 AM »
I post this as maybe it can be useful to someone else:
I found that only with Rockbox installed, also if booted with original firmware, my 1st Gen. Ipod Nano, failed to be recognized, if battery charge dropped below 4 volts.
This problem disappeared as soon as I recharged the battery to full.
This happened with a pci card, but not with the onboard usb port: this might be due to different sensitivity to logical levels and Rockbox higher power hunger.
To better investigate I directly connected the device with the card, thus eliminating the cable usb extention I used, and this solved the problem: device recognition also at low level battery voltage!
So the lesson is: always connect direcly your Ipod to Usb, this may also enhance transfer rate, in some cases.
Hope this could help

I am glad you were not only able to troubleshoot your problem, omron, but also glad that everything worked out well in the end.
I do want to add, though, that Rockbox does not have its own USB mode on the iPods.  Rockbox uses the Apple firmware for USB connections, so any issues regarding connecting to the computer are solely issues with Apple.  That being said - there are two ways Apple connects via USB, and what Rockbox uses is the Emergency Disk Mode, so there may be some slight differences between how an iPod behaves in Emergency Disk Mode and Apple OS.  (Though it would still be an Apple Issue  ;D )

Hi, i experience the same problems with my ipd nano 1st gen 4g connecting to my car stereo via usb, sometimes i plug the ipod in and it is recognized but after a second the car stereo switches back to tuner and cant see the ipod. also if i leave the ipod connected and power off the stereo i need to unplug it and reconnect then which is annoying because then playback starts at track 001. i did not have this issue before installing rockbox.
can someone give me a hint how to solve this?

As soap says above - Rockbox doesn't have any USB code in it at the moment. It use's Apple's code.

So the problem you're having has nothing to do with Rockbox.

If your stereo can't see the ipod when it's in the Emergency Disk Mode, try booting it into the main Apple firmware instead.

i tryed, but when i power on my car stereo the ipod starts up and boots rockbox instead of showing the "do not disconnect" warning, and this did not happen before rockbox was installed, so maybe the reason is in the bootloader? i dont have any experience in coding, but i think the bootloader should check if usb is connected to a host before starting up rockbox, rockbox itselfs does this as it looks to me (showing the usb plug on the screen before the warning apears, which i never saw before rockbox)

(edit) sorry if i´m wrong, thats just what i guess)

Seems to me you missed the bit in the manual that tells you how to dual-boot. Think you should go re-read it.

If your ipod is rebooting OUT of the apple firmware when you do disconnect USB (i.e. turn your car stereo on and off) then it's seriously broken.
