Ok, I reformatted into Fat32 again, because I think last time I had the level above the partition selected when I chose "erase". Does that make sense? Anyway, now I get this:

carl-burtons-powerbook-g4-15:~/Desktop ccburton$ ./ipodpatcher /dev/disk2 -r bootpartition.bin
ipodpatcher v0.5 - (C) Dave Chapman 2006

Does the original Apple firmware still work on your ipod?  It sounds like you wiped it from your ipod when you erased the disk the first time.

A FAT32-formatted ipod with a working Apple firmware is a pre-requisite for installing Rockbox.  Get to that stage (e.g. restore your ipod with itunes, then try the conversion to FAT32 again) and then try ipodpatcher again.

Ok, that helped, but still a problem! Now rockbox appears to be trying to load when I disconnect after finishing the installation, but text fills half the screen, the last two lines being "rockbox error -1    loading original firmware" and then it reboots again and again on loop with this same mesage every time. all I can to is hold down the main button and the 'play' button on the quickwheel to force it to go into disk mode to make it stop rebooting.
