If all my existing players broke, I'd hunt down an iHP-140 / H140 from iRiver.

The Toshiba Gigabeat F series... It has a big screen, big HDD size (perfect to view videos)

He asked which one works best with Rockbox. I'd say that the Gigabeat series of ports is at a fairly early stage, overall.

I don't have any experience with H300's, but I'm fairly sure that would be the best choice for rockbox. It has a nice-sized HDD and colour screen, feature-filled and supported very well.

I use Rockbox on my h320, and it's awesome. The games are great i color, and the sound quality is great, comparable to the h1xx with Rockbox. Rockbox development on the h3xx is on practically the same level as that of the h1xx.

The choice between H3x0 and H1x0 IMHO depends on whether you want the colour screen on the H3x0, or the extra audio capability of the H1x0 (optical in/out etc).  Personally, that would be H1x0 for me, as a DAP sits in my pocket, I don't spend lots of time looking at it. However, as has been said both H1x0 and H3x0 are both excellently supported by rockbox

On the H100 you can see the display without the backlight, on the H300 you can't.

Is playing Jewels in colour worth not being able to see the WPS all the time ...

I have a iriver H1x0 and a Gigabeat F40, both work very well with rockbox, but I can't comment on any other players.

If you want optical out/in and recording but don't care for visuals go with the iriver, otherwise the Gigabeat is a good choice I would say.
