COUNTER-STRIKE AND OTHER WADS IN PROGRESS!!!

<< < (3/3)

GodEater:
Perhaps the reason for the concern should be spelled out :

If the rockbox site is found to be hosting copyrighted material that belongs to someone else, and gets sued as a result - that means no more rockbox for anyone. You wouldn't want that would you ?

Why not?    Why do you all assume that just because they don't use Sierra's code (or the code of whoever the original copyright holder may be) that they are not subject to copyright protection?  Copyright protection exists in all works of authorship that have been put in a fixed form.   These doom add-ons are programs that are works of authorship that have been put in a fixed form.  Thus, someone holds the copyright to them and they are not freely distributable unless that someone has released them for public use.

--- Quote ---Doom addons are normally made for the general public.  If people don't want the general public.  Don't release them.
--- End quote ---
And as I said above and as Llorean has reiterated, if you can show us that these add-ons are in the public domain, then we'll allow the link.  It's that simple.   Saying, "I think he should be allowed to link to these," however, is not the equivalent of showing us that he the right to do so.

Rockbox wouldn't be hosting it, it would be indexing it, and that is actually legal.

Llorean:
Of course indexing and referencing people to copyrighted material is legal. That's why the Napster lawsuit failed. And of course there's no such thing a criminal charge for knowing someone is committing a crime and acting in a way so as to allow or facilitate that.

Oh wait, I was lying about all of that.

Seriously, whether you agree with it the rule is simple: If you post, content that you did not create, you will have to show that redistribution is explicitly allowed. If you link to content, the site linked must have clear permission to redistribute it.
