COUNTER-STRIKE AND OTHER WADS IN PROGRESS!!!
« on: December 29, 2006, 02:57:29 PM »
I am re uploading the modified Counter-Strike addon and other WADS back onto Rockbox and probably iPodLinux.

BUT THIS TIME, I Will give seperated downloads for all the wads, so that people can choose which wads they want.  I would put back up the full wad pack for an easier download, but I think people would rather have it this way.

Thank you to "Muzikaddict" for notifying me that the wad pack had expired.

I should be done in a couple of hours.

Edit: OK!!! I HAVE UPLOADED THEM.  FOR SOME, I CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL WORK WITH ROCKBOX, BUT MAYBE FOR iPodLinux.

The link the the folder is here.

[link removed.  DO NOT POST LINKS TO ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS OF COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS.]

Just click on the WAD file you want to download

Then scroll down a little bit under the sponsor ads and wait until the link appears

Then click on "CLICK HERE" on the Download File BOX

IF you want me to re-create the WAD PACK, Then I may do so, but it may take a while.  Just request the wad pack from my E-mail or right here on Rockbox.org forums

Please DO NOT post links to downloads of copyrighted materials on the Rockbox forums.  This is a rule that we take very seriously.

How was it copyrighted??

I believe it was only a remake of Counter-Strike...

In fact, it wasn't even made by valve or sierra themselves....

From http://www.copyright.gov:

Quote
Copyright protection subsists from the time the work is created in fixed form. The copyright in the work of authorship immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. Only the author or those deriving their rights through the author can rightfully claim copyright.

If these wads are in the public domain or are issued pursuant to a license that lets you distribute them, then you can post a link to them here.  If not, you may not.  If you aren't sure that you have the rights to distribute them, then you probably don't.

These WADS have been distributed throughout the net.

INCLUDING the Counter-Strike WAD...

This wad has been distributed through iPodLinux and Dcemu...

These wads are not copyrighted, and I wouldn't have posted them if they were...

Similar to people asking for links to gameboy roms, you cannot release this info unless it is not copyrighted and was created by a developer who gave permission to redistribute it.

Now, I will only repost it if a moderator gives me permission, but I know for sure that these wads were not created by Valve, IDgames, or Sierra.

Developers were the ones to create these and they are distributed throughout the net, and not under copyright.

So, may I repost the link or may I not?

I see no problem with it.....

The WADS are modifications which use no part of any copyrighted material and are freely available to be distributed.  So the CS Doom Mod has NOTHING to do with Valve/Sierra etc as Vliger has said ;)

Although you will have to supply the original/unaltered Readme with the files ;)

Does it have reproductions of significant elements of Counterstrike? Does it reuse ANY images from Counterstrike? Heck, even the name itself is of question, clearly.

If you can show me that there is a license that allows you to distribute the wads (e.g., if you can show me that they have been released under the GPL), then you may repost the link.  However, the fact that these were not authored by Sierra is absolutely irrelevant, as they were obviously authored by someone and therefore subject to copyright.  Likewise, the fact that they have been distributed elsewhere on the internet is irrelevant unless they have been distributed pursuant to some sort of license that allows redistribution.

Yo.  I have used many addon wads.  I got a counterstrike wad off of a psp haking forum.  It's doesn't use exactly the same sprites.  It does not need a license.  At least it shouldn't.  Doom addons are normally made for the general public.  If people don't want the general public.  Don't release them.

I think the guy should be allowed to post his addon.  But hey!  That's just my oppinion.

As we said, all he has to do is show that it's legal. This requires a link to some license statement from the author, at a bare minimum.

Rockbox in the past has had to deal with copyright issues, and we're very concerned that nobody's rights get infringed by way of our site.

Perhaps the reason for the concern should be spelled out :

If the rockbox site is found to be hosting copyrighted material that belongs to someone else, and gets sued as a result - that means no more rockbox for anyone. You wouldn't want that would you ?

Why not?    Why do you all assume that just because they don't use Sierra's code (or the code of whoever the original copyright holder may be) that they are not subject to copyright protection?  Copyright protection exists in all works of authorship that have been put in a fixed form.   These doom add-ons are programs that are works of authorship that have been put in a fixed form.  Thus, someone holds the copyright to them and they are not freely distributable unless that someone has released them for public use.

And as I said above and as Llorean has reiterated, if you can show us that these add-ons are in the public domain, then we'll allow the link.  It's that simple.   Saying, "I think he should be allowed to link to these," however, is not the equivalent of showing us that he the right to do so.

Rockbox wouldn't be hosting it, it would be indexing it, and that is actually legal.

Of course indexing and referencing people to copyrighted material is legal. That's why the Napster lawsuit failed. And of course there's no such thing a criminal charge for knowing someone is committing a crime and acting in a way so as to allow or facilitate that.

Oh wait, I was lying about all of that.

Seriously, whether you agree with it the rule is simple: If you post, content that you did not create, you will have to show that redistribution is explicitly allowed. If you link to content, the site linked must have clear permission to redistribute it.
