Rockboy Problem?

I have a 5g ipod and I am having trouble with rockboy. I load Super Mario Land, and it loads fine. I set the keys, but the keys seem unresponsive. I press 'Start' many times and it eventually goes. The game starts, but the keys remain unresponsive, meaning that it takes several seconds for me to do anything, IE i press the jump button and it waits a second then jumps etc.

Is it a problem with the rom or what?
