Ipod stocks in boot loader
« on: December 25, 2006, 05:52:17 AM »
Hi there!
I got a brand new apple ipod 5.5g yesterday evening. i tried to install rockbox on it and now i sadly think my little black 30g ipod is dead.
i please you all to help me out of this crappy situation. :(

I used an automatic installer

here is what the ipod is showing all the time:
Quote
Rockbox boot loader
Version: 20060126-1839
IPOD version: 0xFFFFFFFF
TOSHIBA MK3008GAL
No Partition found
Partition 1: 0x0B 7130 MB
Loading Rockbox...

i tried every reset, with cable, without, with pressing MENU while the boot loader starts, it ran out of battery, but when the battery is full enough, the problem starts again.
you see, its very serious :( the ipod stucks on the loader, the original software is not able to load and when i connect it to my pc, it stucks always at the same position and its not shown on my explorer :(

i dont know what to do. if i bring it to the store i bought it, they will see, that i modified the software. i think i can do nothing on myself to fix the problem, so i have no other choice.

1) There is NO official automatic installer. You should be asking for help from the person who provided you the unofficial installer.

2) Hold Menu+Select, as soon as the screen clears when it reboots, hold Play+Select to until it comes up in disk mode. From there you should be able to uninstall.

Restore your ipod using itunes, and then follow the official install instructions.

@Llorean

@linuxstb
i can't use itunes, because my ipod is not in the explorer. the ipod doesn't boot so i cant use itunes :(
this is the easiest way to restore an ipod, but as i already said, it isn't possible.

It is possible if you put the ipod into disk mode, as Llorean said.

Having done the same thing on christmas eve, then succuessfully repaired my unit...

Step 1 : Boot Ipod into Disk Mode
Step 1a : Plug Ipod into pc and let charge for a bit
Step 2: Reformat Ipod as a fat32 drive using windows explorer.
Step 2a : Download and install Itunes
Step 3: After the reformat is finished, use Itunes to restore ipod
Step 4: Follow offical 5.5g install instructions located here

This should set you up with a working install of Rockbox.

Yeah, I've done all this...
All my partition managers and crap wont let me acess the iPod, let alone some don't even detect it.

Anyways, I uninstalled my main linux OS a while back (currently have some really old distro installed that I never finished setting up)...anyways, I primarily use windows and wanted to know if there is any way to get this to work.

I read articles about fixing the partition in linux, but even so many were having trouble...
any suggestions?

hmmm....
well, I just tried formatting it using qtparted (downloaded a live linux i used to use), then when I got into windows (2000), it told me it wasnt formatted....
I'm not sure if windows is doing something wrong, but I am reformatting it in windows either way.

I'll see how the install goes this time...I actually think I may try rockbox w/o restoring my ipod in iTunes.

Also...are people having more luck doing this on a mac?
if so I can possibly get ahold of one to use...

got it working...
I did like 5 things differently at once...so I have not a clue what actually made a dif.
1) used a different patcher file, seems I had the latest but it wasnt the new version with the automated patching???
2) formatted under linux
3) windows didn't like something about the format under linux...reformatted
4) followed the 'Beta' instructions 100% since the '-a' attribute worked for me
and I forget what else I did....lol :P
