Questions about Digital in/out on JBR20

Hello,
My earphone plug is a little chipped on the JBR20 and i wish to use Digital IN/OUT.
First of all, what is it? Can i plug my earphones in it?
I looked in the menu of rockbox (latest build 21Dec06) but found no area to select the output of sound from to "Digital In/Out" instead of "Ear". Thats why, id like to port it. If it can be done by software then good, if not, then id like to mod it. Id like to take off Digital In/Out to replace the Ear jack. Is that possible?

No, it is not possible without a hardware modification.
