Rockbox on iriver Clix?
« on: December 20, 2006, 12:56:19 AM »
I am hoping that I am not the 1000th person to ask this but, is it supported? I know it's not on the main page but, aren't the H10 and the Clix basically the same with the exception of the new GUI? If I try the H10 version will it work? Is the Rockbox team working on a Clix version? I'm sorry for all the questions but I really want to have this firmware on my Clix.

Did you try looking for a "Clix" thread in the New Ports forum?
Did you try using the search bar on the front page of rockbox.org to search the site for "Clix"?

Where did you get the idea the H10 and clix were the same? For a start the H10 is portalplayer based and the Clix is ARM. The hardware is very different from each other.  Were you thinking of the U10 and the Clix?

While Drippy is right that they aren't the same, he's wrong in comparing PortalPlayer and ARM. PortalPlayer's chip (at least the one used in the H10) is an ARM core (ARM7 as opposed to the U10's ARM9) because PortalPlayer is a manufacturer, and ARM is an architecture.

But they are quite different hardware, yes.

Ok, I'll brush up on these things in future :D. So, for the H10 and U10, its Portalplayer and Samsung for the manufacturer and ARM7 and ARM9 for the architecture respectively?

Portalplayer manufactures (well, licenses out) SoCs (system-on-a-chip) which contain ARM cores as CPUs.

ARM is a family of processors, sort of like MIPS, x86 or PPC.

ARM7 and ARM9 are specific families of processors, like the Intel P6 or AMD K7.

ARM7TDMI is a specific ARM processor core (the one used by portalplayer), much like the Coppermine is a specific P6 processor core.

The PP chips are ARM7TDMI cores.  The similarity between ARM processors means we can use the same tools to compile for both.  However, there PP chips also include many other things that on a PC might be included on the chipset or motherboard.

Hope that helps.
