still sounds to me like a flat battery and your charging doesn't work (have you tried if the wall socket is ok? Something like that happened to me once. Try a different socket or a different device, like a usual lamp).

Edit: can you boot with the power adaptor connected? It should boot into the iriver firmware in that case.

He said that booting with the power adapter wasn't working. I guess I'd assume the adapter was dead too, plus a dead battery.

This being the holiday time of year, mini-light bulbs, the kind that come in cheap strings for decoration make (individually) a poor-man's low voltage tester in a pinch.
If you don't have a Fluke (or lesser other multitester) available, you can carefully remove one of your spare bulbs from the plastic base ring, straighten the two wire leads from the glass bulb, and touch the wires to the contacts of your iRiver charger.  Depending on the rating of your bulb you might only get a dim glow, but a dim glow tells us more than we know now.

What if only the LCD is broken in some way?
Do you have a remote (with LCD)?

Also: Somtimes I don't hit the reset button right (with paper clip) at once, but have to try a few times.

If the LCD was broken you would hope he could hear/feel the hard drive spin up.

Thanks to you all for trying to work out what the problem coulsd be but i am a electrician and i am 100% sure that the charger and wall outlet are fine as i have tested everything and ive tried using a pin, paper clip, toothpick and anything else i could fine to try and operate the reset button. Ive tried everything that has been suggested with no luck so far, no matter what i do it wont start up on charger or usb or trying to use the iriver firmware nothing at all happens.

It seems like the whole thing has deleted itself  :'(

Please keep the help coming in tho!!!!

There is a chance that just the charging circuit inside the player or the battery is dead. If you fell bold enough you can try to open the player and measure whether the battery has a healthy voltage (at least 3.0V or at worst a little below) then check whether the connected charger (temporarily) raises the voltage measured on the battery.

i don't own this unit, but what about the simple possibility of the hold button being switched on?

Read again pal.
Or try it on your own and you'll see.

worst case you could got to the iriver store at misticriver and send it to them. it is better then buying a new player, or braking yours while trying to fix it yourself

Hi there,

I had this problem not so long ago, i think that it was something to do with the charging circuit being faulty (strangely enough, i had just returned from travelling too) But the way that i managed to get my stuff off the hard drive was this, leave the unit plugged in to the wall socket but also plug in the USB lead into an active windows machine. You may see the screen flashing over and over again but after a while, it will get enough charge in it to load the firmware and act as a hdd on your PC.

Another thought, if that doesn't work for you, try sticking something to the REC button so that the iriver boots into the factory firmware and then directly into USB charge.

Hope that this has been of some help
Alex
