Descent I or II
« on: December 18, 2006, 06:28:25 PM »
Any chance of Descent reaching RockBox. One of my favorite games. The controls would be hard. Maybe scroll backwards and forwards, arrows rotate, center shoot, a double button combo for missiles and such?
If it is a graphics problem would half resolution work?

The game is named Descent, it is in theory possible (and I think the source code is even available under a GPL compatible license) but there are a lot of controls that would be impossible to do.

You need two degrees of rotation, three directions of horizontal movement (so, 5-axis control so far) plus the various buttons for gameplay control. While some of this could be trimmed, it's still rather iffy. As well, "half resolution" wouldn't necessarily be the issue for speed, but rather the calculations for the 3D graphics, most likely.

Yes I am pretty sure it is GPL, it was in SuSE 8.

I just played the first level and it needs 8 controls to be fairly playable.
right, left, up, down, forward, backward, missile, laser.
Not including hold you have 7 on the iPod (including scroll left/right). My iRiver has 9. Cut out reverse or missiles and you have 7 controls.

Sorry about my bad spelling, I try to spell check as much as possible...

I seem to remember Reverse being pretty important in Descent.  I spent a lot of time backing away from enemies while shooting them.

Not that I'm the target for this game anyway.  I can't stand Doom on Rockbox and this would be likely harder (from a control persepctive)

Yeah I think I would go for reverse over missiles.
I thought RockDoom would be unplayable but I find it very playable and was quite surprised. On any screen other than a 5g iPod I couldn't imagine playing it, I tried it on my iRiver h120 and couldn't see what was going on.

Agreed. It's fun on my video but on my friends nano the buttons are so close together that when you move you switch guns alot. If this was ever made I think it would have to be with a video or any other build with a big enough screen.
