New ideal recording device coming up?
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:14:52 AM »
Quote
18 Dec 01:52  Barry Wardell - FS#6096. Recording on PortalPlayer targets (H10, iPod Video, iPod 4g, iPod Color, iPod Nano) ... The hardware should be capable of up to 24-bit/96KHz

So... Today I'm using my beloved iRiver H120 to records stuff.
But from time to time I think about how nice it would be to have a portable recording device that can record with higher resolution than 16 bits.

Is it possible that the furure will see a new favourite device for us recording geeks?
What are the conditions for the iPods/H10 to record nicely?
I thought there were no inputs on those targets..?

On the 5g, recording is via the line-in pins hidden in the dock connector. On the 4g/Photo, recording is either via the line-in pins, or via the the right channel in the headphone socket which doubles as a mic input.
Do you have to build your own adapter for the dock connector?
Do the H10 have a dock connector?
Recording on a Nano? Also via dock connector?

The H10 has a build in mic and a line in in the dock connector. There have been people who have built a dock connector to line-in adapter. Otherwise you need a dock.

I don't have an iPod, but I think your quote is accurate. You would need an adapter for the iPod dock. You could either build one yourself or find someone who has built a batch of them and is willing to sell one.

I'm not sure whether recording on the Nano actually works. There is some uncertainty about whether it actually has the necessary hardware. If someone could test it then we would know for sure...

I have a Nano, but don't have a line-in adapter. The diagnostics mode contains a recording diagnostic, but it doesn't seem to do anything (I've been led to understand that the other iPods actually attempt to record on that screen, whereas the Nano just waits for you to press a key to continue).

I do not want to disappoint you but AFAIK iPods and H10s lack digital input and I doubt that the analogue inputs in any model have better signal to noise ratio than 90 dB. In such conditions 24 bit resolution does not make much of sense. Also the higher samplerates on such hardware probably will not bring you a noticeable increase in quality in comparison to 44.1 or 48 kHz.

Could possibly get 18 and 20bit from the ColdFire/UDA/TLV on iRiver and iAudio. Haven't gone into actually trying it out though. I think I would skip 18bit for the simple reason samples will be 3 bytes in both cases. And if I vary bit depth on recording I probably would add an 8-bit option for the heck of it at that point since it's all the same once it's changeable. :)

20 bits would be awesome. :)

I think there was a description of how to make one somewhere on the misticriver.net forums.

Mouser has the connector.  Search the misticriver site for the thread and that will give the part # for it.

Two will be listed, one is out of stock (non-RoHS), other is in stock.

BTW,  Does the h10 have gain control at this point?  Same for all portalplayer port?

thanks for starting this discussion. i'm using a h120 right now but i dropped it and cracked the screen, which is now unreadable. it still functions fine and i rely on the remote to view content. however, i'm definitely keeping an eye out for a recording replacement.

h1x0/h3x0 still pop up on ebay from time to time. The h1x0 ones are mostly sold as iHP120/140

hey on that ebay link, i saw sales for iriver x20. i went on the iriver site and didn't find anything. upon further inspection, it's not being sold in the states. but this looks like a great device for recording if it can be rockboxed.

Well, there is currently no port, so if you want one check out the NewPort wiki page.
