If you type "dir" (without the quotes) is there a file called apple_os.bin in the list now?

If it works properly, you just see a blank line, and then C:\Rockbox> again.

Okay, continue.

You may at one point get a message "Generating firmware image for iPod Video" or something similar, but that's just because we never updated the message, it's also not an error as long as you type the commands shown.

No, dir just shows you if those files are in the folder you're in. You don't actually end up putting any files on your iPod from this part of the process.

The very last step, ipodpatcher -w N rockboot.bin writes data to your iPod. All the rest of the files are just temporary for while we work, which is why it doesn't matter where you keep them.

I tried ipod_fw -g video -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-video.bin and it says

Generating firmware image compatible with iPod video
Cannot open loader image file bootloader-video.bin

You have an iPod video, and have downloaded the bootloader-video.bin into the same folder as you put ipodpatcher.exe?

Nope. The only bootloader-video.bin file should be in the same folder as you've got these programs. So, in this case, C:\Rockbox

Can you take a screenshot of your command prompt window, immediately after running "dir" and put it at an image hosting place, so I can see what it looks like?

Ah, I see your problem.

If you notice, the command prompt that you're typing things in at is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>

What that means is "You're on the C drive, in the Owner folder, which is in the Documents and Settings folder."

Your bootloader-video.bin file is wherever you downloaded it to (someplace other than that folder.) The very simplest thing right now would be to download it again, and make sure to save it in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner, then once you do that, try that step again.
