Cant get into ums mode

I got a faulty h10 6gb from ebay. The seller said on his listing that it was faulty but I bought it with a chance that Rockbox might bring it to life. My PC recognises it as a h10 but it makes the PC hang. I cant get it into UMS mode to put the Rockbox files on it. I see from the h10 wiki page there is a prebuilt bootloader for the 10 5gb MTP. Is this what I'm looking for?

When the h10 is not connected to the PC and is switched on it says "System files missing. To restore the system files, connect H10 to recovery tool"   To use the recovery tool the h10 needs to be UMS mode so I am stuck. Rockbox is what I want to use for playing my music but I cant get anything going,  Help please

What do you mean, "can't get it in UMS mode"? Does it not show 'emergency connects' or some such? Is that when you're computer recognises it but hangs or would that happen when you power it up the regular fashion (ie, without holding -O- button)?

When I connect it to the PC whether I use the UMS trick or not the screen on the h10 says "USB connected". When I try to access the h10  the screen on the h10 says "USB busy..." which makes the PC freeze. I got faulty cable for my 5g a while back which made the PC do the same but I have took apart the h10 cable and all the wires look intact to me.

"Took apart the H10 cable and all the wires look intact" doesn't mean it's fine though. As well, your computer is the one showing problem signs (by freezing) rather than the device so far. Have you tried it with a different cable, or a different computer, or both, before just deciding it's bricked? (As well, your use of the word "bricked" is not the definition we prefer to use it for here, as we take brick to mean that it no longer is capable of booting into any mode that is usable without hardware assistance)

Remember that there could be some crossed wires inside the actual rubber shielding part of the cable, which you probably didn't check.

I dont know anybody with a h10 so I can try another lead but I took apart my lead and going by the pics on the misticriver site everything looks ok. I could buy one though, they dont cost that much.  

When I switch it on I cant hear anything if I put it to my ear. Am I right in saying that the 6gb is a hard drive and not solid state?

Right, the H10s 5GB and 6GB use 1 inches drives. And they're not the run-of-the-mill kind that behaves like cf II flash cards, but rather a type that uses a small ribbon to interface to the board. There are a few going around on e-sway but I don't know whether I trust any seller there.

Just to be sure, when you tried to put it in UMS mode, you did completely cut power by taking out the battery to reset the device, right? If so, it does sound like your disc is dead or in real bad shape. Though most reports I've heard had connection going allright but disc showing 0 byte total capacity (ie, none)... Maybe you should try connecting it to another computer, it costs nothing to try.

Ive tried it on my daughters pc and a laptop but came up with the same thing. I wanted to check if the connections to the drive were ok so I tried to get the drive out of the casing but its well in there, is there a knack to it. Also does the ribbon to the drive have a normal compact flash end to it so that I could plug any CF card to it or will I have some soldering to do.

The ribbon connector has the same amount of pins as a normal CF connector, all you need are the pinout diagrams for both and some soldering skill.

I tried once, when my 6G HD was dead, but I couldn't find any pinout diagrams, so I just hit the drive on a table a couple of times and it worked. Also, you could try to peeling off the label and moving the reading head with a small screwdriver.
