5g: Computer won't read ipod as a drive
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:21:02 PM »
I'm not sure which forum to have posted this in, but I gave it my best estimate.  This problem takes place after successfully booting, so it's not the startup one.  If this is incorrect, I'm sorry, please move it accordingly.

Hi, I'm new to the Rockbox.  I successfully installed it on my ipod and it runs just fine.  After transferring all of the updates, I unplugged the device and gave it a listen- no problem.  However, when I tried to plug it in again, windows failed to read the device.  It charges just fine, but no ipod drive or other ipod-centric happenings occur.  In fact, it asks me to configure my Nintendo Wifi dongle when I plug the ipod in, however it already worked just fine and is not in a related USB port (Though now it stopped working, might or might not be ipod related).

What do you think the problem is?  I can't update or uninstall rockbox without my computer recognizing it as an ipod, so how might I move on from this situation?

Thank you for reading, and I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer

Boot your ipod in Disc-Mode ([select]+
for about 6 seconds, then INSTANTLY
+[play])
If it still doesn't work, ???

Hmm, I can't get anything to happen.  Do I hold down the select button for six seconds, release, and then press play?

And would I do that while it's plugged into the usb cord?

EDIT:  Alright, I was able to go into the control panel and figure out that it did indeed read an apple device when I took out the other USB items and only had the ipod plugged in.  I'm afraid that I can't trust this Rockbox stuff to safely handle my ipod.  I am going to miss the games and utilities

Rockbox has nothing to do with your computer's interaction with your iPod.
Rockbox has no USB mode on Apple players.  Rockbox has no disk mode on Apple players.  What you are seeing is the interaction between your computer and Apple's firmware.  Rockbox loves and coddles and massages and rubs and kisses your iPod.  Your issue is with Apple.

While I wouldn't have quite put it the way soap does, he speaks truth. When your iPod is hooked up to the computer and in disk mode (IE: Any time you plug it in, and haven't held Menu to keep Rockbox loaded, which is just a charging mode, and will not show as connected ever), there is NO Rockbox code running, and thusly if you're trying to connect your iPod to the computer and it's not working, it's impossible for you to blame Rockbox rightfully. (You can still blame it, but it's not the cause, since it's not actually there).

Very true but not so very usefull...

To copy files to and from your iPod running rockbox, you need to put it into Disk Mode, just like GNU said above. This page on apple's site may help : Putting iPod into Disk Mode...

If your computer still doesn't recognise it then, I suggest a reboot (of the computer). Sometimes windows gets a bit confused with device enumeration.

G'd luck!
