Can't install rockbox on iPod 4G
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:41:17 PM »
Right, so I followed the instructions here: http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipod4gray-20061210.pdf

and got to step 5, Merging rockbox bootloader with Apple firm-ware

Once at that step, I get the line 'Cannot open loader image file bootloader-4g.bin

Is that what I'm supposed to get? On the previous step, step 4, I also didn't get any message after hitting enter, it just went on to the next command line prompt. Was that also intentionally? The lack of screenshots is puzzling =\

Have you downloaded the bootloader-4g.bin file, and is it in the same folder as you are running the commands?

Yes, yes, it is.  Perhaps you could post some.

Hehe, very nice way of turning it against me :D

Alright, first I download a new copy of ipodpatcher.exe, ipod˙fw.exe, and bootloader-4g.bin

Then I save it to C:\

iPod is restored via iTunes, so the firmware on it is fresh.

Next I bring up command prompt via start, run, cmd, then type in C:\ipodpatcher 2 , as per instructions

iPod is identified

Then I type in C:\ipodpatcher -r 2 bootpartition.bin , as per instructions

Then, C:\ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin
No message, just a skip to next command line

Then, it's C:\ipod_fw -g 4g -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-4g.bin
An error comes up at the end

I continue on to C:\ipodpatcher -w N rockboot.bin anyway, assuming the error is intended

Then I exit by typing 'exit' into command line.

I then go on to download the latest daily build, 'rockbox-ipod4gray-20061211' then extract all to I:, the drive letter my iPod is assigned. I check the root directory and the files are in their place

Then I disconnect the iPod and immediately the apple splash comes up, before showing this

It stays like that, then a click from the HDD and the process starts again, apple splash then that. A restore using iTunes brings it back to normal

I think the last step is your problem.

What is in the root drive of your ipod?

You need a rockbox folder and a rockbox file in there (i forget the exact names)

Whoah! Have you never heard of Alt+PrtScn, it just copies the active window, not your whole desktop ;)

Or you could have re-sized them...

That's a rockbox.ipod file and a .rockbox folder. Can't help with the process, the iPod is an unknown quantity for me.

It is NOT in the same folder, as far as your screenshots show. You're running the commands from C:\Documents and Settings\Howe\ and your file is in C:\.

Also, why on Earth would you assume an actual error message is intended?

Uh, isn't that section of the command line supposed to show which account you're running cmd from? If not, how do I chance that location?

In the interest of eliminating possibilities ;)

No

We need to find a good noobie tutorial for the command line.

Code: [Select]
CD ..
takes you back one directory.
If you were in:
c:\Foo\Bar\Racer
it will take you to
c:\Foo\Bar

Code: [Select]
CD \
takes you back to the root of the current drive
If you were in:
c:\Foo\Bar\Racer
it will take you to
c:\

Code: [Select]
CD racer
will take you to the subdirectory named "racer"
If you were in:
C:\Foo\Bar
it will take you to
C:\Foo\Bar\Racer

Code: [Select]
cd \Racer
will take you to the subdirectory of the root directory named "racer"
If you were in:
C:\Foo\Bar
it will take you to
C:\racer
(Assuming c:\racer exists.)

Code: [Select]
C:
to change to the C drive.
Code: [Select]
D:
to change to the D drive.
etc.

Notice:
My (apparently) sloppy usage of capital letters was intentional.  Windows is case aware, but not case sensitive.
Unlike the Unix, which is case aware AND case sensitive.

edit:  Humor me.  If the directory name has a space in it - put the directory name in quotes
This isn't always a rule, but it never (?) hurts.
Code: [Select]
CD \"Documents And Settings"\poop\on\a\stick
