i need help with this part

Locate the player by opening a command window. You can do this by clicking “Start”, “Run” and typing cmd. Press Enter to execute that command. Now change directory to the folder you created and run the following commands:

how do i change the directory cause i have never used the command prompt before.

Try googling for a command prompt tutorial.

Use of the command prompt is considered for the most part "basic computer knowledge" and you might want to rethink manually installing an alternate firmware until it is more advanced if your computer knowledge isn't up to that level, as you might find yourself somewhat flustered of confused should anything go wrong and you require more technical assistance.

I would say that 95 out of every 100 users under the age of 18 would be unable to use a command prompt, because they have been raised using the simplicity of Windows. As such, I would hardly consider it 'basic' computer knowledge.

For someone who wants to pre-release test an alternate firmware for an MP3 player, it's definitely well within the "basic" range. Windows users under the age of 18 who don't know how to use the command prompt are somewhat unlikely to be in the "useful software tester" crowd for such a product, I'd imagine, and once it's released, command prompt knowledge won't likely be needed to install it.

something like
Quote
cd C:\
then
Quote
cd rockbox
after
Quote
ipodpatcher 0, or ipodpatcher 1

thats if you placed the ipodpatcher in a new "rockbox" named folder on your C drive

Actually, that wouldn't work, unless you're already on the c: drive.  That's likely but not absolutely assured.

Code: [Select]
C:
cd\
cd rockbox
ipodpatcher 0
ipodpatcher 1
... etc

There are step-by-step instructions in the manual. If someone has trouble with them because they are command line I would strongly suggest not to install Rockbox and ask some friend with better knowledge for help or wait until a stable release is out that comes with an installer. Rockbox is quite different ...

Btw, this topic has nothing to do with compiling. Moved to the installation forums.

Just so you know if you still have trouble with the command prompt theres an unsupported installer at www.ipodwizard.com or something.

I think you're referring to the Windows installer made by Kreator666 at ipodwizard.net.

I will state, for the sake of clarity, that this is an unofficial installer.  Any issues with it should be directed to the thread on that site.

And I do agree that those who install Rockbox should probably know the basics of the command line.  It can only help -- especially since certain tasks such as patching and compiling can only be done (to my knowledge) via a command line
