Rockbox and jazz (or classic)
« on: December 08, 2006, 06:32:08 AM »
I have just bought a new 80 gb iPod, my first iPod ever.
I was quite surprised about the poor Apple software aspect and so I browsed the net and found this magnificent program. Unfortunately the operating system in my iPod is new, so I'll have to wait to upload your program, and I will solve the first "problem".

With the number of songs increasing skyhigh, I feel more and more increasing the problem of a good database to select playlists.

For instance, in jazz songs there is quite often information about:
1) the year of the performed piece and the year of the CD publishing;
2) various takes of the same piece;
3) many performers I would like to link to the same piece (for instance, the four components of a Quartet);
4) the instrument every performer is playing;
an so on.

Similar information is often present/needed in classic music.

Does any programmer ever thought about a new database engine for Rockbox? I mean a real database, not a "single table"-database.

Thanks in advance, and well done to all the programmers that worked and are working on this program!

Well... There is a pretty good database in rockbox, and it is being worked on and improved all the time. Have you checked the wiki? More precisely: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/DataBase

Yes, there is and it is, but it does not support any of the metadata that the OP is talking about and is unlikely to in the short term, as probably most of those types are not 'official' ID3 data.

@oreiPi - You would probably be better getting a music management application (Foobar 2k, Media Monkey) to create the sort of metadata databse you require, generate your playlists with it and then just copy them to your player.

It's a less flexible, but more powerful option for your needs.
