Can I use rockbox while charging at the same time?

Basically my question is this:
I like the clock in rockbox. Can I set the ipod in the dock and have the ipod use the USB power instead of the battery so I can run the clock?
I tried doing the "safely remove usb" in windows but it still doesn't enable rockbox, just the checkmark saying OK to disconnect.
