I assume from this line you have discovered that deleting the .rockbox folder does NOT clear your settings.
Your settings are stored in a special warm place safely off the main partition. To clear the settings, boot the player with the hold switch on. This is what bascule was asking you to do.
So try that, clear settings, enable Last.FM log. Reboot (cleanly :) ). Check if the log is enabled, assuming it is play at least two tracks in a row (queue up track two before track one ends), and check if the log has been created. (Does the failure to log first track bug still haunt us?)
Edit: I made a weird sentence. ;)

It does.

Thanks for the info but no joy. Ready to throw my nano across the office at the moment.
I did the reset thing (cleared appeared on screen and had indeed cleared my settings). Enabled last.fm log, rebooted (i tried the hold play to switch off then swtch on, and also tried flipping the hold switch then holding menu and select until it reboots)...last.fm log is still showing as off :(
Is there some other magical reboot option i can't see? They're the only 2 that i saw in the instructs and neither seem to work :(
But thanks for the help!

Quick update.
I completely rebuilt rockbox. I.e. trashed the install buy putting the Apple firmware on and then followed the instructions to the letter again putting todays latest firmware/build on it.
I still can't get last.fm log to enable. If I reboot (flick hold switch, menu+select held down) then i go and see what it's set to and it's always off.
Any other thoughts?
Cheers!

Ok. I think you are doing the process wrong somewhere. Here is the step by step process I think you should be doing.
01.) Turn on your iPod Nano, complete with hold switch. This should produce a "Settings Cleared" message.
02.) Go into the menu and turn on Last.fm logging.
03.) Turn off your iPod Nano by holding the "Play" button. Do not use Menu+Select.
04.) Turn your iPod Nano back on (ensure the hold switch is off).
05.) Check the menu, Last.Fm logging should be *on*.
Also, be aware that the last.fm logging does still have issues with logging the first track you play (at least it still doesn't log the first track for me every time for me).
