Archos JBR 20 Hard drive error, but disassembled HD works fine

Hi,
My JBR 20 shows an HD error with the comment "Please check your HD" for quite a while new. After having finally gathered the tools to disassemble the JBR, I checked the HD in a different USB disk drive, formatted it and copied the latest Rockbox version on root.
After reassemling it, the same error appears. It is the original HD that I bought with the player 2002, no changes on hardware since.
Can it be that the HD interface is giving up now?
The first symptoms showed that it gave me 1 out of 10 times access to the disk, but lately it is useless to try, always the same error.
Can anyone report the same error, or even better: know a remedy?
