iHP-120 - disconnected in USB mode everything screwed - need help

Hi,
I did a stupid thing yesterday when disconnecting my iHP-120 while in USB mode whithout deactivating first (the harddrive was spinning exchanging data with my PC).
After this, everything went nuts.
My PC wanted to install a new driver for USB device which failed everytime.
When I switch on the iHP I get a *panic* ATA -32 message.
When I try to boot to original firmware with disconnected USB (holding Rec button pressed) it boots up to iRiver firmware and the screen constantly jumps beetween USB disconnected/connected and reading file system and the harddrive never stops.
Recharging battery didnt help.
Resetting didnt help.

Any suggestions?
Is it possible (if everything else fails) to remove the harddrive, connect it to my PC with an adapter and do a format?

I'm on Win 2000 SP4, Rockbox version is about half a year old. (can't recall exactly which build). never had any problems so far.

bascule:
You *should* (if the Rockbox bootloader is OK) be able to plug in the H120 to the PC via USB with the player switched off and then start the player.

As the bootloader does not need to see the disk, RB should start in USB mode OK. Then you'll have to try and format the drive over USB using Windows (insert more detailed instructions here, it's never been my speciality).

Failing that, your first suggestion would work, but do try everything else first ;)

Cheese_Us:
Already tried to do this.
Windows then wants to install USB drivers which fails somehow and leaves me with a uncorrect installed USB device in the device manager.

update:

since everything else didnt work I'm now heading for formatting the harddisk in my pc.

I have already separated it. What kind of adapter do I need to connect it to my pc?

Stu L Tissimus:
You would need a 1.8" ATA adaptor. But good luck finding one.
