Why 2 wps theme web pages?
« on: December 03, 2006, 08:08:59 AM »
It seems theres 2 seperate places to get themes from.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsGallery

http://www.rockbox-themes.org/index.php

Doesnt this serve to confuse and also theyre not the same. I have a theme I made and its only on one of them.

the 2nd is someone elses site, the first is the official gallery. It would be great to only have 1 wps repository, but it wont happen

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Oh right. I thought that web address was a "sub-website" of rockbox.

Thanks for clarifying.

Rather than starting a new thread, I figured I'd hop on this one.

I want to open discussion about rockbox-themes.org--I'm curious how the devs feel about it. Frankly, I don't understand how it's been allowed to continue. I don't know much about licensing.. I know that people are totally given credit on the site, but it just doesn't seem kosher that another site is taking themes from the wiki, posting them, AND making it appear as if it's part of rockbox.org (whether or not the owner is a well-intentioned rockbox enthusiast or not).

Aside from all that, my feeling is that it's illogical and just plain cumbersome--the wiki is there so that it can be updated by anyone at any time; this site has scraped things from all the various wps wiki pages.. but what about when there are updates?

I can understand that the person behind was most likely just trying to provide a service by improving upon the wiki; however, I believe it is misguided and could be a cause of much confusion for users.

15:12:19   preglow   are anyone looking at what wpses we should bundle?
15:13:07   Paul_The_Nerd   Has anyone actually submitted any WPSes through the proper process recently?
15:13:28   B4gder   I think we've hesitated to accept any
15:13:54   B4gder   I'd rather have us arrange them in a new way
15:14:10   B4gder   with ~3 WPSes for each target LCD
15:14:50   B4gder   I wish someone would bother to setup a dedicated site and service for Rockbox themes

and then a few hours later...

17:18:04   RedBreva   Just reading the logs, anyone have any objection to me having a go at a mini themes site (as a proof of concept)
17:18:18   B4gder   on the contrary!
17:18:54   B4gder   I'll even offer you a name for your server in the rockbox.org domain! ;-)
17:21:18   RedBreva   heheh, I'll knock something up in my own domain initially and see if it looks OK first ;-)
17:21:42   B4gder   oh sure, just showing my enthusiasm! ;-)

The problem with the Wiki is that it is a free-for-all and there is a lack of consistency between the way themes are packaged etc.  There are a lot of the themes on there that require patched builds, but do not mention it, or provide a link to download a suitable build...  and it can be just plain confusing for new users.

I agree, rockbox-themes.org is much easier to navigate and understand than the wiki especially the
required build field in EACH wps's post. I also like how there is some degree of regulation with regard to the format of the submissions (zip file, proper images etc).
However, that's not to say that the wiki should be tossed, I think both should be maintained and kept current with each other.

I will mention one con about rockbox-themes.org though: there's only one image, so users don't get to see the backdrop for the menu.

Okay. I hear ya RedBreva. I understand you've got the best of intentions.

It just seems to me that energy would be better spent improving the wiki layout, etc, than making a different site, but .. I can stop now--I've said my piece. :)

Well the Wiki is open to all - why not start those improvements yourself ?

I'm on the "rockbox-themes.org" side of the argument - if all the WPSs are properly stored in an organised way, then we have the potential to update them by script if there are ever incompatible changes to the WPS system, or if we implement features such as loading all .bmp files from a .tar file (which is a proposed change).

With everything stored as random attachments to the wiki, updating the WPSs in bulk is almost impossible.

Ditto.

I'd go further, and have a system where you can check what you have (ipod 5g, album art, scroll margins, whatever) and it'll show you every WPS you can run.

Not that I'm offering :)

Now that's a cool idea, especially since a lot of themes use scrolling margins or album art (or the jbuild patches for that matter) so I'm guessing users that use the daily builds might be a little confused about which WPS work and which don't.

So as most people agree on that webpage, why not making it a real part of the rockbox project by using a rockbox.org domain as Bagder offered?

I have one gripe with rockbox-themes.org. There is a very old version of my theme (DGT - see the iriver h300/120x176 wps gallery) on that site that was uploaded without credit to me I didn't mind at the time but i've updated my wps a few times since. I tried contacting sysadmin@rockbox-themes.org but did not get a reply. I've also tried uploading newer versions twice and it hasn't worked...  ???

*edit* scrap that, looks like its been sorted now  ;D
