1.i have made a playlist using itunes
2.i know that rb will play m3u format playlists
3.i converted the playlist to m3u using an app called songlist to m3u
4.imported to rb and it will not play
i don't think i can be any clearer!

Yes you can! It's not a question of clarity, I understand your problem. I need more information, though, in order to actually help resolve it.

1. What does that statement mean? I do not understand you.
2. Open the playlist in a text editor and check that the path to a file (\music\artistname\album\song.mp3) exactly matches the actual folder structure of your player (iPod by any chance?).
Playlist generator applications can create *broken* files if designed for Windows, but used on a different platform (i.e., Rockbox).
3. Do you know how to navigate your music and create a playlist using built-in Rockbox functionality? If not, learn this first before trying to use an externally-generated file.

It should have an extension of .m3u. Itunes cannot produce m3u playlists afaik. You will need to use another program. Commonly used audio players like Winamp and Foobar will both produce the type of file that you need as well as many other programs.
