Database not Ready
« on: November 29, 2006, 12:39:44 AM »
I've just installed rockbox on my 4g Ipod, and  I've initialized database, but now i am getting this error when i click on artist, album or whatever:

Database is not ready.

Any ideas?

well, have you read the twiki fully and double checked your steps to make sure that you didn't miss something?

I'm getting the same error on my 60gig video: when I try to access 'artist', etc. i get "Database is not ready" and there is another message in the background that is covered up by the "database is not ready message"

oh ok, you are using id3 database correct?

if you are, have you switched the reader to ummmm, the id3 in rockbox?

How long does it take the database to load? Is it possible that it hasn't loaded fully yet?

...what am i missing please!?

Patience ;)

Tag Cache takes 5-10 minutes to complete it's work, then a 'proper' shutdown and reboot is required in order to commit the data.

Then you need to set the file view to ID3 Database

It's the 'proper' shutdown bit that catches out the unwary iPod user, due to the unusual hardware. There's a key combination, but I don't know what it is...

You want to shutdown, not reset.  Press and hold the pause/play button.

well, what is the diference?
unless that is where you have to do the 5-10 wait minutes there

but if not, then reseting will do the same thing

The difference could not be larger.

Menu+Select causes a reboot at the hardware level.  Like pressing the reset button on your computer.  The operating system doesn't see it coming, and doesn't have a chance to save state before the reboot.
Pressing and holding Play/Pause causes Rockbox to gracefully shutdown on Rockbox's own terms.  Just like the "Shut Down" command on your Windows computer.

So which one should the OP use to ensure Rockbox does a DataBase commit on restart?

I'm asking partly for my own knowledge, as I've never even operated an iPod, let alone seen one with RB on it  ;)

Shutdown (holding play/pause).

Note how he used the words "doesn't have a chance to save" and "gracefully shutdown" to describe each option.  ;)
