ipod video install problem please help
« on: November 28, 2006, 04:21:12 AM »
I have followed all the instrutions to the letter 3 times.

On step 6 I get this message:

Generating firmware image compaitble with ipod video
Cannot open loader image file bootloader-video.bin

If I contine past this point anyway, at the end after rebooting my ipod tells me to restore it with itunes.

I have no clue what I am doing wrong. I have typed everything correctly and no other errors.

Thanks for any help!

So, you got an error message, you chose to continue despite the error instead of stopping to get help, and then it didn't work and you're surprised?

Do you have the file bootloader-video.bin in the folder where you're running the commands?

There is no need to be condescending and rude. It is completely uncalled for. I would think it is below the character of an admin.

I looked for help in the manual and in the other threads I did not find anything. This was a last resort and I still get flamed after asking nicly.

Of course I knew it was not going to work. So what. I also knew I was not getting help the same day so it was worth a shot.

No I do not have that file. But I did not have the other 4 files when I started either and I have them now.

Well, you said that you have "no clue" what you're doing wrong, which is a somewhat ridiculous statement when your message includes an explicit error message telling you what you'd done wrong (specifically not having that file in the folder during the steps).

Did you keep a backed up bootpartition.bin as you were instructed? If you did, start from immediately AFTER the ipodfw -r N bootpartition.bin step, and try again from there, coming back here if you get any error messages. As you notice, you did get a reply not only the same day, but nearly an hour within your posting for your first post, and 2 and a half for your second.

You should always stop at an error message and research it, rather than just bullheading through. If you'd had a non-iPod MP3 player, there was the possibility of rendering it permanently unusable if you actually botched and install. Fortunately you're using one that has additional precautions built in, but we cannot protect against user error entirely, so error messages ARE there for a reason.

I can see your point. However I had none of the other files when I started and the programs created them for me. So I was under the impression that file would also be created as well.  What I intended by stateing that I had no clue what I was doing wrong was that I followed every step and it did not work correctly.

I will attempt your instructions now. However I do not have the missing file (bootloader-video.bin
) nor do I know where to get it. You reply seems to be saying I have to have it. I do not see anything about it in the instuctions other than the one command. I will do what you said and see what happens.

I do very much appreciate your prompt response. Thank you. However this has not been my usual experience on forums where people take days to weeks or never do answer your questions.

Only reason I was unconcerned with the possibility of permanent damage, was I read alot of forums before touching my ipod. I found out it is very unlikely anything you can do will permanently harm it. As well as instructions on how to restore from a bad install. No way I am risking $350 without knowing how to fix it if something goes wrong.

 :o

I see the problem. I somehow in 3 (3am) readings of the directions missed the section where it not only tells you that you need the file but where to download it and what to do with it. My apologies.
