ipod mini 1g--from full battery to dead in 5 minutes?!
« on: November 26, 2006, 12:16:20 PM »
This is probably day 3 of (trying) to run rockbox on my ipod Mini 1st Gen.   I think I've gotten the menus/settings/tagcache mostly figured out, but I can only get about 3 minutes of browsing/playing before the display briefly shows a "low battery" indicator and shuts off on me! Then it won't reboot unless I plug it into the charger for 10 minutes or so--then recharges for 2 or 3 hours!  This has happened to me TWICE in two days.

The battery is a replacement--probably only 6 months old or so.   Under the Apple OS, I was getting 4,5, 6 hours of play time?

Any idea what's going on??  >:(

Did you try to boot into the original firmware? Because if the battery life using apples fw isn't much longer now, it might be a faulty battery after all. The replacement batteries are often of poor quality...

sorry to put this tread up,but with rockbox I have this same problem..but mine is a 2nd gen mini...with the original firmware I can get very good battery life, could it be because of playing a flac file?but a 3hour ou more chargment to last 5minutes is very bad :S
offtopic:
does the ipod has anyproblem reading a 325mb file?because it "crashed"..and the file was ripped from flac to m4a..with rockbox trying to read big files like this ones crashed too..

This thread is getting out of hand.
Three people have now reported extremely short runtimes in Rockbox, but until the following questions are answered there is nothing that can be done.
1 - How long does a fully charged battery last you when running Rockbox with cleared/default settings?
Do not assume your settings are still at the default.  Clear them
Run the battery bench plugin to accurately record the runtime.
Remember that the WPS does not report accurate battery life estimations.
2 - How long does a fully charged battery last you when running Apple O/S now?
Play equivalent bitrate files in the Apple OS as you do in Rockbox.  Don't play FLAC in your Rockbox test and 64Kbps AAC in Apple O/S.
How long it lasted a week ago is not relevant.
LiIon/Poly batteries can go all at once, and can dramatically fail regardless of age or treatment.
The fact you may or may not have a new(er) battery is not relevant.
If you are unwilling or unable to check your iPod every 15 minutes to see if it is still running, plug it into your computer and record the output so you have a record of when it stopped playing.
3 - Where have you posted the battery bench file from step 1?
Much can be inferred on the condition of a battery based upon how it discharges.

Until now I coulnd't do an "right" benchmark with my battery but,I did it this way,on a trip I played about 4hours of music with the original firmware (no dual boot, nothing, plain original),then came home and charged the thing, installed rockbox, and played some common mp3,guess what, for about 5hour chargment the thing last about 8min..no more than that...:(

Could you proofread your posts, please?  This is incomprehensible.

Why exactly are you unable to do a proper battery bench?

because I am having some troubles with my car,and I have very little spare time to do anything...
I only used the ipod when I went to oporto some days ago,and it was fully charged (about 5/7h chargment) and I could listen to 4hours of music, and still had battery...
Then to try rockbox..I charged the ipod agian for 5hours,and listen to some mp3,and the battery only last about 8minutes..no more than that

Yes, and as we told you a proper discharge curve from your battery_bench will tell us a lot more. Fully charge your battery, then do a bench. If your battery lasts as short as you say, it really shouldn't take you long to do a bench.

sorry for my english..but how could I do a full bench of my battery?
I will do it,but for me it is a lil bit obvious,if the ipod plays at least 4hours with the original firmware, and with the rockbox firmware it doesn't play even 10minutes..something is wrong..
But just tell me how to do,and I'll do it =)

Use the battery_bench plugin.

And yes, something is wrong. But the question is "What is wrong" and that's what we're trying to solve, remember?
