Step 1) D = apple_os.bin is Zero KB

please ignore the next three posts, i started with having a problem in step 1C, that I solved, but am now bumping on step 1D, hence the change in the topic title. Please go directly to 4th post in this thread

Hi there,

trying to install rockbox on Ipod photo 60gb, from PBook with no PC at hand.

Did reformat the Ipod to F32 ok I think, following required steps, using Terminal only.

Then with ipod unmounted, tried step 1) C:

Code: [Select]
My-Mac:~/desktop/rockbox MeMyself$ ./diskdump -r /dev/disk2 bootpartition.bin
diskdump v0.1 - (C) Dave Chapman 2005
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.  There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

[INFO] Reading partition table...
Part    Type   Start Sector    End Sector    Size (MB)
   0    0x0b             63     117210239       57231
[INFO] Seeking to sector 63
[WARN] Seek error - reading 63 sectors instead
[INFO] Writing 117210177 sectors to output file

I basically killed it when it got to 500MB, as the installation guide said it should be around 40MB.

I did everything again, erasing the ipod and reformatting, same thing.

I have searched the forum but no mention of this problem as far as I could tell.

Any idea?

Cheers

just noticed one thing in the installation guide, in the section about formatting as Fat32:

it says
Code: [Select]
newfs_msdos -F32 -v iPod /dev/rdiskNs2

seeing as my ipod has been given the name "disk2", should my command read:
Code: [Select]
newfs_msdos -F32 -v iPod /dev/rdisk2s2

or was the last "2" a typo, and my command should be:
Code: [Select]
newfs_msdos -F32 -v iPod /dev/rdisk2s1

?

thanks a lot

nevermind, answered my own question.

It had to be diskNs2.

Sorry for the stupid post  ::)

As said previously, solved my own problem, and got a bootpartition.bin of 39.2 MB.

New (improved!) problem

Step 1D
It first gave me an apple_os.bin of 4KB, so I redid the step, and it now gives me an apple_os.bin of Zero KB.

And that's all there is to it really.

You know, there is a "modify" button for a reason.

so true  ;D

I did manage to install rockbox today btw. I just ignored the apple_os.bin size and it seemed to work. It doesn't boot to the apple firmware though, but you can't always get what you want.
