Rockbox freeze on iPod
« on: November 24, 2006, 07:11:28 PM »
I got my rockbox/ipod working today. It keeps freezing up in the middle of playback????????? Then I have to menu and select to get it to reboot. Is this a bug. Do others have this problem. It has locked up a dozen times in the first day.

A-  Don't ask about your iPod crash in a iRiver thread.
B- Be a dear and tell us what model you are using, what build of Rockbox you are using, and any other details which might help.
C- Of course freezes in the middle of playback are a feature of Rockbox!   :P
D- I suspect you have a 4th generation iPod and could learn much about your problem reading the forums.

Yes 4th gen. newest build as of yesterday. Are you being sarcastic when you say freezing is a feature of rockbox. Hell, I just want someone to tell me the truth. I didn't need help getting it to rockbox, and won't need help getting it back to normal. I just want to know if this program works. I am a dj on live radio and cannot have this type of problem over the air, I have to have something that works almost everytime. This is a promising program, but does it work?
Sorry I didn't notice the last thread was not for ipods.

No he was not being serious about it being a feature of Rockbox. A flaw, maybe, but not a feature.

It is believed that most 4th generation ipod crashes are due to a problem with changing CPU frequency.  In general throttling the speed the processor runs at is good for battery life.  There is a patch in the tracker to disable CPU frequency scaling on the ipod 4th generation, and if you don't feel comfortable with the process of patching there is a maintained UNSUPPORTED build in the unsupported builds forum with the patch already compiled in.

great. What do I do with this file once i've extracted it? The .rockbox folder has one of these with the same name. Do I replace it?

Same as any other time you will change a build, extract the files from the new build over top (overwrite/replace) of the build currently on your player.
You could delete the .rockbox folder and replace, but then you would lose all your fonts, themes, etc.

Let me go ahead and take this oppritunity to ask:
You did download the fonts didn't you? :D  While they are not required as such for a base install, many themes expect you to have the font pack installed.
There is a font pack on the daily builds page linked over there. <----
The font packages don't change (very often) so they are no longer delivered with the daily/CVS builds.

NO, but I will do that now. Thank you.!!!!
EDIT: Went to daily builds and didn't see anything about fonts.
Do I drop the font download into the .rockbox folder after extraction?

well I replaced that file(rockbox.ipod) over the top and now I get a codec error and it won't do anything. First of all when I go to the builds there are three choices for my unit a ....22 .....23 .....24 -I choose 23. This stuff is not clear.

You need to replace the entire build, not just the rockbox.ipod file, when you update a build.

It's not at all clear to me why you were overwriting the rockbox.ipod file at all in the first place.  Soap's post suggested that you get the font pack.  The font pack is a .zip file containing different fonts.  It is the same for all platforms and simply needs to be extracted to the player?  How did you get from there to replacing the rockbox.ipod file?

Because the title of this post is ipod locking up during playback, which was my real problem. When I downloaded the fix and extracted the file it was a .rockbox.ipod file and There is one of those in the .rockbox folder. So, It was my understanding that I needed to replace that file. So, I need to replace the whole build. what are the steps? extract, then.......?
