2G Mini Cycle of Doom
« on: November 23, 2006, 11:06:33 PM »
Hi everyone,
I decided to try Rockbox cos my mate uses it on his iPod and I want the best app around! Problem is I'm getting the cycle of doom after I install the firmware. I followed the instructions EXACTLY as stated in the online manual for the 2G iPod Mini (4GB). Is anyone able to help me?

Here is the command sequence I used, after downloading all required files and extracting the Rockbox files to the root directory of my ipod (as stated - http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodInstallation):
1 - ipodpatcher -r 6 bootpartition.bin (I found that 6 was my Mini)
2 - ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin
3 - ipod_fw -g mini -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-mini2g.bin
4 - ipodpatcher -w 6 rockboot.bin

Upon ejecting the mini from my PC (XP Pro SP2) the following occurs:
1 - blank screen
2 - Apple logo
3 - Rockbox boot-up text (checksums match if that helps)
4 - Rockbox startup screen
5 - blank screen
6 - "Do not disconnect" logo
7 - REPEAT ENTIRE PROCESS

I know my iPod Mini is second generation because the font colour on the click-wheel matches the case colour, and that its capacity is shown on the back of the case. I downloaded the correct firmware as well.

What am I doing wrong? I can readily restore my original firmware, but I really want to use Rockbox :)

When you ejected, did you pull out the plug?

I used the USB icon in the system tray and safely removed the hardware. On the iPod screen, it showed a tick with the text "OK to disconnect" underneath. I removed the connector and rebooted the iPod - cycle of doom.

I restored my iPod and tried again, this time ejecting the ipod but not disconnecting via the cable and i got the same problem.

Does anyone know what I've done wrong in the firmware flashing?? I really want Rockbox because I'm sick of having to use an iTunes-oriented interface to transfer my music to my iPod. If I can successfully flash Rockbox to my iPod I can ditch any 3rd party software.

Wow it really sounds like your iPod doesn't want Rockbox. The only thing i can think of is that you corrupted the firmware file but restoring your iPod would take care of that. Hmmmmmm. Ill edit when i think of something new. :P
