ipod video?
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:07:54 PM »
Hi, i have two questions, one is how to determine if my video ipod is or isnt generation 5.5.

and secondly, im wondering if rockbox allows the ipod to be linked to more than one itunes library? That really bothers me when want a bunch of sons from a buddy's computer. Thanks.

Rockbox isn't linked to the iTunes library at all.

When did you buy your iPod?  What size is the hard drive?

when using rockbox, to play music you have to drag and drop it onto a folder on your ipod and you can play it from there just click on that folder and then the music file when you are navigating through the rockbox menus.

so, you dont use itunes at all if you have rockbox loaded onto your ipod.

but, if you want to play videos with sound you will want to go back and use itunes and the original  os because rockbox doesnt support videos woth sound.

There are few ways to tell - how recently did you buy your iPod? Go to the Settings - can you change the brightness of the LCD?  If so, it's a 5.5 generation.  Also, the 5.5 introduced the 80GB iPod - so its a 5.5 if its 80gb (if its 30gb, it could be either - try the LCD thing).

One of the advantages (i think) of Rockbox is that it doesn't use an iTunes library (as others here have mentioned).  This enables you to drag and drop the songs as if it were a hard drive.  I have it mirrored to my music collection on my hard drive, which is organized by folders.

In your case, this means you can get music from a thousand different computers and Rockbox (and thus your iPod) really doesn't care.

The adjustable brightness was introduced in the new firmware, not with the new 5.5gs only.

Yes, but basically, if your iPod had the adjustable brightness out of the box, it's very likely formatted in the way the 5.5Gs are whether it technically is one or not.

You can have your iTunes library on your iPod. I did this for a while but then I switched to audion.

If you do want to put rockbox on then you can go to ipodlinux.org and then download one of the old ipod updaters.  Then just restore your ipod with the old updater and rockbox should work. (I think)

The search function was added to the 5th generation models also through the latest firmware update.  That is not a reliable method.

A true 5.5g's serial number ends with  V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, or WUC.

If your iPod came from the store with the search function, then it's probably a 5.5G. If it didn't have it when you bought it, but does after an upgrade, it's probably Rockboxable. Serial numbers are not reliable, because 5Gs bought after the 1.2 firmware upgrade rolled out, even though they don't have 5.5G serial numbers, suffer the same problem as "true" 5.5Gs
