Newbie with voice problems
« on: November 13, 2006, 06:18:36 PM »
Hi folks,

Okay, I'm pretty green - I've only been playing with the Rockbox stuff for a few hours - but wow!  I'm impressed with all the work that's been done - open source rocks!

My problem is that I can't get voice working properly - I have pretty much the same problems that another person posted (Voice Prompts, posted by Janine on 7/15) - it's not reading properly, skipping menu items, speaking random letters and words, and speaking things like contrast x, shuffle x, etc.  I have a 4G iPod and I'm running the latest Rockbox build (11/13/06).  I've also tried all the latest voice files.

I've been running XPlay forever with no problems and I have about 4,000 songs on the iPod.  Since it's Windows formatted I didn't bother to blow it away before installing Rockbox but I did set the system limits up high in case the number of files in the Xplay folder structure was causing problems (saw something about this in another posting).

Any thoughts?  Could XPlay have anything to do with this or could it be something else?  Should I reinitialize and start from scratch (I haven't because I'm just testing and because it takes so long to upload 4,000 songs)?

Any help would really be appreciated.  My best friend is blind and I'm hoping to give him my iPod for Christmas (and, of course, buy myself a new one!!).

Thanks in advance!

I presume you have read this http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceHowto and other related info?

You definitely should not have to reload the music, but bear in mind that if XPlay uses nonsensical folder names like iTunes does, then voice support will only be useful for menus, but not for reading out folder names etc.

Oh yeah, I've read through the documentation - it all seems so dirt simple I don't understand why it doesn't work.

What's really bizarre is that I am getting some menu items pronounced correctly but on the wrong menus.  For instance, if I scroll through the General Settings menu I get things like balance for the playback option, bass for the file view option, treble for the display option, loudness for the system option, etc.  It's all quite odd.......

Where did you get the voice files from? Which voice file, *exactly* are you using?

I downloaded them from the twiki (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceFiles) and I tried each of the english.voice files in the three Microsoft SAPI5 files.  I also made sure that the language setting in Rockbox was English and the only file in x:\.rockbox\langs was english.lng.

So, you're trying to use the voice files for 2.5, rather than the daily/cvs build ones?

From the tone of the question, it was beginning to look like I had the wrong file.  I downloaded the voice file for the daily builds and it's now working.  Thanks for the help.
