Wrong installation broke my hard drive

(1/1)

muriloq:
I've did a very, very stupid mistake: when copying rockbox.bin to my iPod Nano 1st Gen, using dd in Linux, I accidentally overwrote the wrong partition: instead of /dev/sdb1 (the first partition of my iPod) I erased /dev/sda1, the first partition of an external USB drive (it's an 80 GB IDE drive, with a single FAT32 partition). The total amount of overwritten data was 5162560 bytes.

Unfortunately the backup was done correctly (i.e., from sdb1, the iPod) so I can't restore it. Is my data in the hard drive lost for sure ? If there's a way to recover it, which program should I use ?

Thanks a lot in advance !

Try TestDisk. I overwrote the partition table/MBR on one of my drives once and it was able to find the partitions and reconstruct the partition table.

You can also try GetDataBack.  It's saved my bacon a couple times.
