You can charge without rebooting into disk mode by holding down the menu button while plugging in the dock connector cable.

With menu held, and the cable plugged in, are you still able to play music?  Or does the iPod act as if it were connected to the computer?

The only other thing I can think of would be the type of cable you are using.  Is it a firewire cable, or usb cable?  Could the cable be damaged?
I'm sorry, I don't know what else to recommend.

well, when you have it plugged in and it shows a cable (assuming rockbox is loaded) it is charging but rockbox doesnt show that little charging sign like the original ipod firmware. You can just wait about an hour or two and see if the battery is charged.

if not, i dunno what to reccomend

Rockbox charges slower than the Apple firmware right now. This means that when you combine that with the fact that Rockbox uses more power than the Apple firmware, it's possible that you won't actually gain (or may even lose) power while in Rockbox.

The best solution for charging is still Disk Mode or Apple OS.

Reverse engineer the USB controller within the PortalPlayer chip so that we can draw full power across USB instead of 1/5 of it.

Basically, there's nothing you can really do but wait until the device is more supported.

I don't know if photo's can do this but try changing it to the apple firmware like mightybrick says. If holding menu didn't work just try a couple more times or hold menu+select until it restarts then hold menu. It works for me but I have a video.
