iRiver H10 volume issue?
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:07:04 AM »
First off I just wanted to say hi to everyone and thank you all for all your work with Rockbox! ^^

And then I'd just like to discuss something I found really weird.
So, I was listening to my H10 (UMS 5gb) when I went to bed running the daily release as of 2 days ago (2006-11-11). I fell to sleep just to wake up with music literally blasting through my headphones, so freaking loud that I had to rip em out of my ears, somehow my volume had went up to max and I'm telling you, that wasn't a pleasant awakening.

Now of course I thought what you all must be thinking right now, that I accidently managed to hit the scrollbar in my sleep.

So, I turned down the volume, put on some music and went back to sleep, just so I could wake up another time, however this time it was even worse since it was death metal blasting through my headphones, and I just couldn't turn it down, the scroll wasn't working. At this point I just felt like throwing it at the closest wall and watch it break, however I just deplugged my headphones and shut it off before I went to bed for the 3rd time.

So, anyone else having the same problem or got a clue why this happened? It's really bad when you wake up in panic and at this rate my headphones won't last much longer :(

I'm just about to go to bed again, I guess I'll have to test and see if it'll happen again >.<

Actually, it's a flaw in the hardware (to my understanding) where when the voltage gets low, the ADC reads volume up scrolls when there aren't any (if my memory is right, I'm far from actually knowledgeable about H10 issues still, I'm a bit behind). The iRiver firmware shuts down before this becomes a problem.

I'm having the same issue with my iRiver H10 (20gb). I just installed 3.0 and after 3 or 4 minutes, Rockbox will jack the volume up all the way and then suddenly shutdown. Anyone else have a work-around or is this just how it is with it being a "hardware issue?"

Thanks guys for Rockbox! I love it so far!

@Qazwix:  You may wish to replace the battery, since the battery you have currently has probably worn out due to age.  I had the same trouble before I replaced mine (thing would hold a charge for about 30 minutes of use and the touchpad would set itself to scroll up, or increase volume to dangerous levels when on the WPS...), and once I replaced the battery with a new one, all of that was fixed (get nearly 16 hours with a 1700mAh replacement and no scroll-up when it's nearly empty).

You can find them at online retailers or even eBay for fairly cheap, just search for "iriver H10 20GB replacement battery".

@Llorean:  I believe it's not so much an issue with the hardware as an issue with aged stock batteries...  Since I replaced mine when it was showing its age, I can run the thing right down in Rockbox without running into that issue of the ADC being set to high values...  With the old battery, it would do the same thing in the original firmware, though it usually caught it and shut down before the volume got unbearable.
