smp500:
I actually downloaded ALL the test videos (some elephant thing m2v), and they either buffer forever or just quit, no message or anything. I also tried transcoding some of my own mpg videos with the mencoder method, but nothing.

I asked you to avoid using the word "it" because it is not clear what you are referring to.  So you go and type a seven word sentence that uses the word "it" three times.  That is not helpful.

Let me try this one more time.  Could you please explain exactly what you are doing?  In other words, type (or cut and paste) exactly what commands you are running and exactly what the result is.  Do not say "it says error."  Type the EXACT error message that you are receiving.

ok, ill try one more time.

i have downloaded the videolan program-

when i open the command prompt here is what happens

Specified COMMAND search directory bad
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

The system cannot find the path specified.

it wont find the program and it is in c:\programfiles\videolan\vlc

that is what my problem is and i need help.  i have reinstalled videolan and still nothing

soap:
This isn't really a command prompt support channel...
that being said.
Are you sure your path is "programfiles" and not "program files"?
Have you looked in the vlc folder for vlc.exe?
