Well, this isn't really a general RMAA support forum. With Rockbox you can actually know the level you're outputting at, with the Apple firmware you don't really (though the line out should be ideal, assuming that changing the volume on the iPod doesn't change the volume that you get from the Line Out).

RMAA is sometimes annoying and can get buggy. Get a wave editor (good choice is Audacity) and record the test with that. Normalize to -3dB, save file and use RMAA to analyze it (there's an option for that).

In windows theres a line in volume level.  You should be able to adjust that.  Basically, you just need to adjust the level so that the player isn't clipping when you're recording.  If thats not working, something is probably wrong with your sound card or the way you've wired it up.

It might not be a bad idea to try recording something with the wave player tool in Windows just to make sure your Mic jack actually works too.

RMAA has an audio calibration mode which automatically runs before you start the test itself, you really should calibrate the volume level to whatever RMAA normally wants using it's own Calibration signal.  On the few DAPS when driving a load even their max vol won't get you the needed -1DB.  When driving without any load right into into high impedance line-in then it was around 50% vol on the ipods.  Without any load the ipod generates perfectly flat frequency response thru the headphone port or thru the lineout.  Although ipod's lineout is just really a fixed volume output, not a more-real line out like say a Sony NW-A1000 which appears to have proper line out voltage when in lineout mode.

To expand on that last point, you should remember that you're only testing one configuration when you run RMAA.  A device driving a real load will behave differently.

For best results, you should try different setups.  Using a headphone jack splitter, you can put your headpones and the mic cable in at once, thereby testing how well the device is driving the headphones.  In the case of the Ipod, this gives VERY different results.
