Installed H10 20GB Rockbox today... ugh
« on: November 09, 2006, 10:45:38 PM »
Downloaded everything and followed directions according to the Rockbox H10 pdf.
Download seemed to work fine. As I started the H10 20GB unit, the only thing that
I saw was text and Rockbox. When I got into Rockbox I had the choice of 8 or so (from my memory) choices to choose from. Playlists did nothing whatsoever even though I had 35 or so songs loaded to the Iriver. None of the choices brought up any of the files that I already had on Iriver.
Downloaded an older version of Rockbox (about 3 days older) and had similar happenings.
For whatever reason, none of my files showed up, if I didn't push a button for about 10 seconds, the unit would go blank, etc....

Unfortunately if this is the way Rockbox works, I'll go back to the Iriver firmware.

Read the manual, it has everything you need to know about rockbox.

I suggest reading the manual... you were seeing the root folder of your drive, and the folders contained within it. Not a menu with options.

I'll go back to scratch and try reloading again. I did not have the type of menu that is suggested in Getting Started. When I turned Iriver on, I had the choice of text or Rockbox. I often had to hold the 0 key down just to get into Rockbox. From there I had about 8 choices... including Playlist, all the way down to Create Directory, but none of those choices lead to finding the music that I had on the Iriver.   hmmmm

It's rather evident you didn't actually pay much attention to the getting started section of the manual. YOU DO NOT START IN A MENU. YOU ARE IN ROCKBOX. Rockbox is a filetree. Saying "I often had to hold the O key down to get into Rockbox" tells us rather clearly you didn't read very thoroughly at all.

As Llorean said, it's not a menu, it's the file browser, i.e., a list of the files and folders in the root of your player. As the Getting Started documentation states, you may not see anything except the statusbar at initial power on.

By doing a long press of the Ffwd ('0') key, you have brought up a context menu as also described in the Getting Started link above.

I really don't know what you mean by this, especially the 'text' bit.

Please read the Getting Started closely with the player in front of you, so you can follow the directions immediately.

I'll go back to scratch and try reloading again. I did not have the type of menu that is suggested in Getting Started.

"Quick Start" clearly explains that Rockbox does not start in a menu.  It starts in the File Browser.  From the Quick Start page of the manual:

Quote from: Rockbox Manual, Quick Start
After you have first started the player you’ll be presented by the File Browser. With the default settings only supported files are shown. Rockbox’ default view is the File Browser, similar to Windows’ Explorer.

Now, regarding this statement:

Quote
When I turned Iriver on, I had the choice of text or Rockbox. I often had to hold the 0 key down just to get into Rockbox. From there I had about 8 choices... including Playlist, all the way down to Create Directory, but none of those choices lead to finding the music that I had on the Iriver.   hmmmm

What you have entered is not "Rockbox" (you're already in Rockbox), but the File Context Menu.  This is described in Chapter 4 of the Rockbox Manual.

(Note:  Though the hyperlink in my first post was correct, I mistakenly referred to the chapter I was linking to as "Getting Started," which is Chapter 1 of the Rockbox Manual, rather than "Quick Start," which is Chapter 3, and others have followed my lead and used the wrong chapter name.  I've edited it to correct that mistake.  I apologize for any confusion.)

Actually I did pay quite a bit attention to Getting Started, followed the directions, and fully understand that Rockbox is file driven rather than menu driven... however I call the choices that come up when turning on Iriver a menu (even though it is not graphical, it is still a menu of choices), rather than a filetree. I use Linux Ubuntu on a daily basis, am familiar with line code rather than graphical interfaces, and just wanted to pass along what happened after I loaded Rockbox (including fonts and voice) and the trouble that I was encountering. I followed the manual step by step and after finding out that the 11-9 version did not work, I deleted everything and loaded the 11-6 version... only to have the same results. Because I followed the directions, I was easily able to reload Irivers firmware and go back to Irivers graphical interface.

After I turn on Iriver, I get into a menu (oops filetree) that gives me a choice of text or Rockbox (only two choices). If I want to get into the choice of Rockbox, I have to hold down the 0 key rather than just touching it once. It then gives me a choice of about 8 different filetree items, starting at Playlist and going down to Create Directory. Unfortunately after clicking the 0, nothing came up within the Playlist. I also found it bizarre that there was no choice of settings (to change) available. My browser never looked like the info given within chapter 4 of the manual. I did not have submenu's under Playlist. So, I'll go back to reloading it again tonight. Although I am a photographer and purchased the Iriver mainly as a photo storage device (I picked up the H10 20GB for just over $100, I gotta find a way to make use of those darn $400 Sennheiser headphones).

I'm really sorry, but you have not understood any of the posts above regarding the context menu. The context menu will not help you to get started.

The file tree entries you can see are as follows:
'rockbox' is the firmware file itself (actually rockbox.iriver) that should have an icon to the left looking like an X with a hat or the rook/castle chess piece.
The 'text' entry could be a text file (icon is lines of text) or a folder (the icon for which looks like a rectangle with a button on top).

You say you copied songs onto the unit, where did you put them?
If you put them in the root of the player, then they are an unsupported type, otherwise they would be shown.
If you put them in a folder in the root, the folder should be visible and pressing '0' whilst the line is highlighted should enter the folder.
If you put them anywhere in the .rockbox folder, they will not be shown, as this folder is hidden in the default file view.

Please try to give more information, rather than repeating what you said in your OP. Rockbox does work and is working on your H10, you just need to work with, rather than against it and take the advice given.

Maybe that is part of the problem. Rockbox does not have an icon of any sort on my unit.... not next to Text and not next to Rockbox. It is just plain text. When I turn on the unit, this is what I see:

text
Rockbox

If I click on Rockbox it does nothing. I have to hold down the 0 key. Once I get to the next menu of items (file tree), I have the same problem. If I click on Playlist, nothing happens. If I hold down the 0 key, it goes into a blank screen or jumps right back to the file tree... starting with Playlist... ending with Create Directory. The music that I have stored is in a subdirectory of root (Music). The scroll bar just makes the unit flash on and off and if I don't touch a key for about 5 seconds, the whole unit shuts down.

As I've said, I'm a Linux nut. I know line code and where items should be placed. It just seems as though not all files were created/created in the right place after executing the zip file. If I connect the unit to my laptop, I see the drive, can get into the drive and even play the music... right from the folder (Music) in Iriver. The problem is, Iriver (on the unit itself) does not allow me to see those files... MP3's.

It looks as though I'm missing some files, so I'll just do a fresh upload tonight. I've worked with many open source files before... there just seems to be a glitch on whatever I loaded to the unit.

Have you tried TAPPING the O key, rather than holding it down?

Yes... on my unit it doesn't do anything. It does not progress to the next branch of the file tree. It does work with Iriver's firmware so I know that it isn't an issue with the unit. Like I said, I'll get everything off the unit (minus a copy of Irivers firmware) tonight and then reload the necessary Rockbox files and finally add the music back in as a folder within root. Hopefully this fresh install will take and I'll be a happy camper come tomorrow.

Rockbox

What does the text say?  Or does it actually say, "text"?

Try this.  From the File Browser, press the Power button to enter the Main Menu.  Navigate to the following menu:

Main Menu --> General Settings --> File View --> Show files

What is the"Show files" setting set to?

the text only says text. If I hold down the 0 key (because just touching it doesn't work), it opens up to a blank screen.

Unfortunately I do not have a Main Menu. If I hit the power button, it does not go into the main menu. It just sits at the text Rockbox screen. If I hold down the power button the unit will shut off however. So, none of the other options... Sound Settings, General Settings, etc... are available for me either. Like I said, I did read through the Manual. Something obviously loaded (and I could navigate slightly), and most obviously did not load correctly. As I believe I stated in another post, if I hit the scroll button to either go up or down within the file tree, the unit starts flashing on and off. If I don't hit a key for about 5 seconds, the unit turns off. Really bizarre.

I really appreciate all the help and advice that I've received here. Like I said, I'll completely get rid of all files (with the exception of the Iriver firmware of which I will have a backup copy within the System directory) and I will reload everything tonight. The UMS trick works fine and the zip file that was put in root (and then extracted) created a bunch of new folders. Everything seemed to work fine... I'll be trying this again in a few hours when I get home.
