Feature query H100 series - SPDIF power setting for recording
« on: November 08, 2006, 06:06:19 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone would find it useful to be able to have SPDIF switched on in the WRS even if it set to off in the playback setting.

If it is already on in Playback Settings, it will stay on when leaving WRS if set to be on all the time. If only set to on in the recording menu it will switch on when recording for feedthrough and turn off again when no longer needed.

I'll combine with the fix for the little bug I introduced if so or else I'll just commit the bug fix alone.

I vote for an entry in the While Recording Menu that simply does the same thing as the optical out entry in the playback menu.   That way if you want to turn on optical out from the "Recording Screens" (While Recording Screen or Recording Menu) there's not need to exit all the way out to playback.

I think the recording code should enable S/PDIF when it is selected as a recording source. After recording, it should be restored to whatever the playback setting says.

Enable the digital output unconditionally when using the digital input even if it's not desired?  ???

Yes. Or at least let it be the default setting. Why not?

...when I come to think of it, who monitors the signal using S/PDIF when recording S/PDIF...?

I disagree and agree.

I personally don't see a purpose for optical out during optical recording. But maybe someone else does.

I also don't see the point in having a different behavior for the optical out only during recording.

Why not just let the user turn the damn thing on or off?  Why have a recording specific behavior, further complicating things?  What's wrong with the old fashioned switch?  It's similar enough to a light bulb, right?   :P

Putting a menu item in the recording menu to turn optical out on/off would be convenient, but not absolutely necessary.

My $0.02   :)

I do :) - at least sometimes.

Normally, my MD player is connected digitally to my stereo system.
It has only one digital output.

So when I want to use the Iriver to record a minidisc and listen
to it over the stereo at the same time, I connect the MD out to the
Iriver in and the Iriver out to the hifi in...

Regarding the rest of the discussion:
I don't mind having to leave the recording menu to turn on the output,
as most of my digital recordings are done at home with no time pressure.
