Faked firmware on IPOD Nano
« on: November 07, 2006, 02:44:18 AM »
My wife bought me an Ipod Nano (8GB) in china 2 months ago. What I could figured out is that this is either all faked or only the software might be faked. The firmware on it is SC85051F
2006/04/25
ACT_V3.5.35 from Wilson ltd

Obviously I could get any upgrates from them, you can’t even get hold of them. I can copy files directly to the nano but it is very unstable and I want to install RockBox. Ipodloader tells me the following message when running it with 0 as parameter, “error locking disk: Access is denied”, the rest says “drive is not an ipod, aborting” or “Error opening disk: The system cannot find the file specified”

I couldn’t get any help so far on the forum. I don’t even know if the Ipod boot loader is still on the device

I did some more testing with the device switched off as well as on. Running ipodpatcher 1 when switched off returns “Error opening disk: The system cannot find the file specified”, running ipodpatcher 1 with the ipod switched on returns “drive is not an ipod, aborting”. Looks like the apple boot loader doesn’t exits on the system anymore.  :(

I would have thought it would be pointless to sell a genuine Nano with 'fake' firmware, when it is hardware that's normally copied.

Your biggest problem is that you are not trying things from a known state of the player, therefore results may well be unexpected.

Try downloading the Apple iPod installer from their website and attempt to install genuine Apple firmware to the device. That should tell if it's fake hardware or not. IPL might only think it's not an iPod because it can't find the genuine firmware to patch.

There is no 8gb Nano supported by Rockbox anyway. The only 8gb is the 2nd Generation, which we don't support. If it looks like a 1st Generation, then it is indeed fake hardware (which seems likely as it is).

I dowloaded the IPOD updater as well as iTunes 7. None of them was able to pick the device up as an Ipod. My wife has a 4GB nano with exactly the same software. I believe it is fake, but shouldn't it be possible to get this fakes to work with the software. I'm busy downloading cygwin. Will see if I can get the source to compile and if I somehow can get the device to work. Live is just to hectic right now. Thanks anyway for your help.

There is absolutely *no* guarantee a fake will work. It is entirely possible that the internals are 100% different.

Without wishing to sound patronising, doesn't Caveat Emptor apply here?

'I bought a really cheap iPod (insert any shiny must-have item) in a country reknowned for fake consumer electronics and it turned out to be mis-represented. I'm really shocked.'

Why are you shocked?

Since the 8GB Ipod Nano can't even run Rockbox, your random MP3 player is not going to work, even if its the same hardware.  Which it is not.

Then see here: http://www.s1mp3.org/en/ It's definitely a knockoff but there's a firmware replacement project in progress.
